How To Build A BA Astina Sleeper - ProjectR Style
Step 1 - Buy a series 1 (94-95) BA Astina.
These are the cheapest BA Astina ($3000-$5000) and come with a gearbox strong enough to handle turbo engines. Series 2 and 3 do not have this gearbox. Step 2 - Fit Borbet rims and Kumho tyres. Borbet rims look like any boring 15x6.5 +45 rim from the 90s, but are infact 15x7 +35 (left) or 15x7 +30 (right), so they allow you to run wider than normal tyres and widens the cars track also. Hence more corner speed. This will give others the impression that you are running regular wheels and tyres pachages. This is where you make your car look like a sleeper. No bigger than 1 inch over standard. These Borbet rims can be purchase through Dan (Rupewrecht) for around $600-$800 depending on the yahoo jp auction. Kumho KU36 tyres are semi slick tyres made for club curcuit racing, but still very good on the street. Many other brands and models are available to use:- Toyo R888 or R1R, Bridgestone RE55, Yokohana A048, Federal 595RS etc. Smaller rolling diameter = quicker accelleration. Step 3 - Install bigger V6 brakes. (Pic/s to come) Bigger stopping power. The larger rotors and better designed calipers compared to the Sumitomo caliper used on I4 Astina will increase braking performance. The bigger rotors will fit inside the 15" rims. Use the V6 caliper and hub, I4 axle and get new slotted rotor drilled in the 4x100pcd. 4 stud stock looking but bigger and better. Or try the Subaru 2 pot option: - http://www.astinagt.com/forums/showthread.php?t=10847 Step 4 - Install various suspension components. (Pic/s to come) This is a area where many options are available to you. Basicly you wanna make the car handle through corners and brake well. The good thing about BA Astina is that they have a very large wheel arch/well, so you can lower the car 30-40mm and it still looks standard height. Various options are available to lower the car. Coilovers, lowered springs and shocks. Could go on and on about options, but I'm not writing a epic novel here. Simply lower it the 30-40mm max and no one will notice you have a modified suspension. If you fit something with bright colours, get out a can of matt black spray paint and cover it, making it look stock. Some things are a must, a front strut brace and rear sway bar. Both these item will improve the cars steering and cornering characteristics. Again paint them matt black. Step 5 - Fit GTX motor. (Pic/s to come) <add text here> Step 6 - Pull all the interior out. (Pic/s to come) This is probably the simplest part of the build. Just start pulling, un-clipping, ripping, un-screwing stuff and chuck in all in the garage. This will remove alot of weight and that equals quicker acceleration and better cornering. Best to leave in the dash and front door trims. This keeps metal parts away from you. The window switch on the rear doors car be zip tied to part of the metal door frame. Spare tyre + tools = 30kg Back seat = 15kg Passenger seat = 10kg Air con = 30kg Stereo = 10kg Carpet/Linings/Other = 10kg If you install coilovers, you'll drop about 5kg in weight also. Some itinstalled item will increase the weight of the car:- turbo, intercooler, bigger exhaust, sway bar and strut brace/s. Complete - A 1100kg(ish) car with 150wkw(ish). You started with 1180kg car with 65wkw, and turned it into a 1100kg car with 150wkw. From 55wkw per tonne to 135wkw per tonne. At it only looks like a stock BA Astina hatch (see pic above) that has been lowered with simple small rims on it. You'll shock a few peps with it's speed. Nice post Ryan, but you tempt me so bad (Rupe knows ).
And those rims in the lower pic are very nice indeed. Good work, Gav. |

value for money, this is certainly one route i'd take in the future
For $7-$9k, an ultimate sleeper it'd be

you know what would be an even better sleeper, but slightly over expensive, a second GTX motor placed in the back AWD twin-engined, twin-turbo, AWD beast.... with a bit of weight reduction as well, how interesting would 300-320kW be in an astina :O

step one complete,
this is exactly what Ive been thinking of doing to my car if i ever get money, although there's no exhaust in that list, u can have something that sounds good but is quite at normal speeds, and not a 3" tip

after typing for a while, i didn't finish the engine section. intercooler, engine, ecu and exhaust mods still need to be inserted into the 1st post under the "Fit GTX engine" section. will update asap.

I think it all comes down to a matter of taste and preference... and budget.
For speed, adrenalin, fun and affordability, i think its hard to go past something on 2 wheels. Motorbikes arent everyone's cup of tea, but they are fast and exciting. For $5k you can get a nice sports bike in the 250cc category as well as the correct gear which will keep you safe(r). The cons are - they aren't practical, they aren't weather proof, they are dangerous, high maintenance etc etc... But as far as cars are concerned, there is the always the 'sensible' option of, both car, and modifications undertaken to improve it... and the passionate approach. And it is all individual, so trying to argue with passion by using sense and reasoning is somewhat useless.

i dunno if you could call it a sleeper if you look at the interior and its all been ripped out..the point of a sleeper is to make it looks stock.
good post/read anyway |

as for being dangerous, I disagree, incompetent/complacent riders and cagers (well, incompotent and complacent car drivers) are what make it dangerous. 99% of my bike related near misses and mishaps are from people just not paying attention or taking advantage of you. though I have had 1 crash... It was rider error |

no not dangerous in that sense... but there is an absence of airbags, seat belts, and a tone of metal protecting you...
but the mobility and ability to get out of really potentially dangerous situations is amazing .

One of my friends works as a paralegal. She told me yesterday of a case where their client was on a motorbike travelling behind a ute and the ute's brake lights didn't work. It braked suddenly, causing the rider to veer into oncoming traffic to avoid hitting the ute, and instead causing him to collide with a car. He's now a paraplegic and he's suing the ute driver for his injuries.
In addition to all the horror stories my family has their own - my dad's cousin who shares my name died in a pretty horrific motorcycle accident, so despite how much I like the idea of getting one, my parents would never forgive me. Instead, if I felt the need for a go-fasty vehicle, money willing I'd probably get something like a Focus XR5 or Golf GTI - something that's still practical as a daily driver, but a lot of fun. God I can't wait to get a decent job... |
