need info on Mazda B6 sohc. manual.

hello to all of you here, a few i may already know from www.ozmazdaclub.com but most are new to me, so hello to you all.

my problem is, i am going to be buying a new car in the near future and have found one that i quite like.

it has a B6 SOHC injected engine, 5sp box, and has low kms for it's age 120,000.

my question is, how reliable are the B6 engines?
how can i tell if one is affected by the infamous crankshaft problem?
and how hard/expensive is it to fix a broken synchro?

thanks all.

b6 engines arew very reliable but at 20 years old or more, that would be a guessing game. sohc, dohc, carby, efi, turbo, blown.

i owned 6 different b6 engines in my old laser and have never heard of any infamous crankshaft problem.

a broken synchro problem, probably cheaper to just buy a new box and do a swap.

the crank problem affects the 1.6 Mazda MX5's its where a locating key breaks and causes the timing to be horribly out and can kill engines.

i'm not sure if it affects FWD B6's though?

the engine in the car i'm looking at is a Single overhead camshaft. and it's N/A.

the b6 and bp mx5 and laser/323 blocks, heads should be the same, the inlet pleunium feed opposite direction, air-con belts etc are all different.
but inturnals as far as i'm aware are all the same, but i could be mistaken.

i'll put it this way, after owning a sohc b6 in a KC laser for 4 years and 110,000km i never had that problem. tappet seals and timing belts (replaced every 50k) were the main issues. it was a free revving 7000rpm engine with 1000s of mods. i treated it like dirty and the crank never gave up.

cool.

that means the only issue is the synchro.

is a synchro ring a roadworthy issue?

because if it is i might be able to get the dealer to fix it, becasue he said it will come with RWC, year's rego, and 3 months warranty.

It's probably not, but i'd still get him to fix it if you can. What gear is it it on?

2nd gear.

it crunches on a 3-2 downshift, but fine on a 1-2 upshift.

all other gears are fine.

didn't have time to test if double clutching still causes crunch.

Hmm well it's one of the most likely to break i think

Depends if you can live with it or not, i guess!

But it wouldn't be cheap to fix as of course the box has to come apart and you've got to pull half the gears off one of the gear splines.

hence why a said a gearbox swap, pop new clutch in at same time and you've saved yourself that future problem for another 150,000km

The crank issue most certainly did affect the fwd incarnation of the B6. Having said that, I've never really come across anyone who's had the problem with a sohc B6. Only many people with DOHC & B6T.
