Exclamation Timing issue

hi guy's,

haven't been on here in ages.
anyway,
i understand the method for adjusting the timing,
however, as i have asked a few times before,
which timing mark should it be set to.

Is the largest tooth closest to the front of the car 0 DBTDC, and does each tooth increase by 5. ????

I am asking this because i am still having some issues with the car. once it gets hot it seems to be down a fair bit on power.
I have replaced the plugs and plug leads as well as the coil lead.
I am running 98 octane. and just want to make sure that i have set the timing correctly.

thanks heaps,
AzzA

hope this helps. large tooth is 0 BTDC and each small mark is 2 degrees. your timing should be set to 10 -12 BTDC. 10 BTDC is the next large mark towards the back of the car is 10 BTDC

Finally got around to timing it this weekend (haven't driven it in weeks)
It was definitely way off.

it now is smoother, has more power, doesn't miss, and runs cooler.
So obviously i was getting mild detonation issues.

got another Q regarding timing...
what it the optimum DBTDC??
at the moment it is set at 12 DBTDC,
if i am always running premium (95 - 98) what is the 'optimum' timing (for power out put)????

cheers,
AzzA

12 BTDC is the safest but you can try running it at 13 or 14. But pay attention to engine detonation under all sorts of driving conditions ...specially under load and going uphill. Without a knock sensor ECU relies on your ears!! Its more of trial & error before you can find the optimum setting.

yep, that's exactly what i thought,
I will increase to 13 or 14 then. but will definitely keep an eye on my temp gauge,
If its running a little bit hotter then i will have to back it off a bit.
I will regularly check my plugs too, just to make sure its not detonating (as light detonation is inaudible)

Cheers,
AzzA

I just got back from a drive,
and i have noticed that the car seems to lack power at 2000rpm,
anything over 2000rpm and it runs perfect, and anything under 1900 it seems fine too,
however as soon as it gets in between 1900 and 2050 it just seems a little bit dead.

what could be the cause of this?

get some carb/efi cleaner in a can and give it a good clean out

Good read here

http://www.fordlaser.com/viewtopic.php?t=21496

Do it just before your next oil change as it will drop alot of the carbon into your oil and it will go black, or if you do it now, be prepared to do an oil change and add a new oil filter

keep the engine running the most efficientetc. if its too far off it will potentially damage the engine!

Wow, how can I know when the timing is off? I'm afraid it will damage my engine...

bad noises coming from the engine. im not an expert by no means but dont attempt this without a timing gun and some common sense

if your timing is set way too advanced then you'll hear detonation or knocking (ping) noise from the engine under load or acceleration. This is bad for your engine in the long run, can cause damage to your engine

If your timing is set too retarded then your engine will lose power, sluggish acceleration and poor fuel economy. This is not very bad for your engine.

with a timing gun ,12mm spanner , screw driver, a jumper wire and some commonsense you can easily check & adjust base timing and base idle speed
