BJ2 SP20 - OBDII diagnostic tool... help please.

Been reading up on this and I'm so confused. Pre-CAN, post-CAN, no OBDII, yes OBDII, only US, etc. etc., totally confusing.

What I would like to know is if I there is a scan tool that plugs into the OBDII port (yes there is one under the dash) so that I can read fault codes, and data, in real time too if possible. The car is a 2001 BJ2 Astina SP20 5spd.

Also, read about a plug-in Bluetooth OBDII reader that you can use your mobile to check codes, live data, etc. True or false?

1) Not sure if the 2001 is OBDII compliant. Not required in Oz until 2004/05 but imported cars could be due to O/S spec from earlier. Sometimes the plugs could be misleading.

2) True for Bluetooth to phone code reader. See below.

3) As for protocol I think the CAN Bus will be later models. More likely one of the older serial protocols at a guess.

2 cont'd) Best way is with TorquePro (~$5-10) on an Android device, Bluetooth linked to a Bluetooth 'dongle' (cheap copies are on EBay). If you want a good 'un it'll cost ~100+ but they do read faster apparently. Some cheapies have faults. I've been lucky with mine. TorquePro will autodetect the protocol.

If you want to see what I've done with mine you can look at my Forester diesel thread *HERE*

Come to think of it, a guy at work I know has a very similar SP20. I'll see if I can plug into his if I can and let you know this week.

I cut n pasted your Q on a couple of forums Jazzy & this reply ^^^ may help ?

Thanks for that MIB.

Downloaded TorquePro for Android. Looks like an awesome app. Now to get it to work on my 2001 BJ2 SP20.

Just to make sure I'm on the right path, I have taken a couple of photos.

OBD2 plug location:

Back of OBD2 plug:

I have read the OBD2 for BJ2 was a "fake" to comply with US requirements for 2001. There seems to be only 4 wires at the OBD2 plug. Will this still give me the full functionality of the TorquePro App? Found THIS video of TorquePro used on a Mazda 6 and wondering if the 2001 SP20 will have the same capabilities? I like the mini ELM327 as used in that video for the same reasons... clearance to right leg when driving. Is this a good dongle?

Sorry for the noob Q's . This is my first car and I want to make sure it is 100% when I go for my licence in about 6 months.

You can pop the obd2 port out of the bracket easily and route cables wherever you want / have any dongle out of the way. Just push in the retaining clip each side. Or unbolt the bracket, it's just one bolt if I remember correctly.

I've got a dongle on the way, so I'll test it out as soon as I get it. Given the price of those things, I don't have anything to loose if it doesn't work.

Yep same here. On order is a ELM327 Wifi dongle. Read so many (many, many) bad reports on the ELM327 though. Damn Chinese copy versions. But I gambled and bought it from the linked (apparent) specialist reputable Australian retailer in NSW.

Have also downloaded Torque Pro for Android, and if that does work then I will also try FORScan Lite for Android. Apparently much better for Mazda and Ford.

Both above linked Apps do have a free version if you want to make sure it works before getting the paid version.

Purchased mine from Darwin should be here any day now. Downloaded Torque light just to get started. I have a sr laser 2001 as well thats definitely not obd11 ,went through that a few years back.
3 teenage kids with cars ,if the dongle works it will get some use.

I thought the only difference between 2001 Laser SR2 and 2001 Mazda Astina SP20 was different front/rear panels, side skirts and the interior trim. Everything else including driveline was the same??

Different ecu to apparently ! The fords also dont get the tower brace, the engine cover , leather gear knob and steering wheel. Personally I think the ford looks more aggressive The body kit sits lower and the body moulds are colour coded. PS they did do away with those Fugly roof rails

Update:

Received my OBD2 adaptor today and tried it out just now. It works!!

Only had a few minutes of play with it but seems to work a treat with Torque Pro. Fault codes, live data and more available on your phone! All for just over $40. Well worth it IMO.

Available live data:

So far so good. I will update with pros and cons in the coming days.

How did you go xeon8, vkrules?

Still waiting too haha. Still on the boat from China too I suspect, and I've messaged them numerous times with very vague replies. I'll play it out and see what happens!

Hey mine just arrived.so far works good. only running torque light, might just spring for the pro version for more features.
Went for a quick drive checked fault codes.induced one and then cleared it.
Checked intake temp only 3deg above ambient, modified intake must be working ( will see if I can get that better).
all the usual work maf speed rpm volts fuel trim ect. lag is not bad you can use it real time.
Not sure how much I can read until I get time to play and load the pro software.
So far I love it.

Mine just arrived actually, and yes it works I'll run Torque Pro now, but I only had Torque Lite just to try it out!

Ok... so I've been using the Torque app and OBD adaptor for a week or so now. With my limited driving (on my L's) I've been able to get some great information from it. Scanned for fault codes and I only had one code () on first scan, relating to catalytic converter I believe. Cleared the fault codes a few days ago and have done about 25km's of driving since to see if that particular fault code will pop up again. I did a scan for faults just before, after a short drive. It hasn't! But there is this in the emission monitors. I will investigate further as to why Catalyst is showing 'Incomplete'.

Some of the other useful realtime information available for BJII SP20...

Interesting that when the Speedo is showing exactly 60Km/h, these are the results showing with GPS and ECU. Top display is GPS, and bottom is direct ECU output. Seems that the GPS is closer to the Speedo reading. This is with factory wheel and tyre size. But I'm guessing the ECU output is probably the true speed.

Conclusion, well worth it. Ok so the BJII SP20 OBD doesn't have the same amount of info available post 2009 vehicles, but still great information for the beginner (me). Only wish there was a air/fuel ratio meter available. But there is fuel trim, which you can use to monitor A/F ratios. Just leaning on how to do that at present. All in all, a great way to keep an eye on the SP20's health.

Funny I'm getting the same cat error code, intermittently, and my cars only done 89,000 km. For the speedo check you need to find a straight flat bit of road and hold the speed constant. to many hills and turns gives you an incorrect gps read
I like the 0 to 100 k timed runs. makes it easy for testing. A fun device , I'm surprised it works so well on such an old system.

Technically it's not an error code. Did you check emission readiness when you first hooked up the adaptor with Torque? Was catalyst incomplete showing?
Have you cleared fault codes since you got the adaptor + app?

Yes I checked the readiness and cleared the codes. I get the p0241 code for the cat as well. Only after sitting overnight with a cold start!. Clear after hot and go for a drive and the code doesn't show. Might be time for a new highflow cat
How accurate is your speedo at 100 2kph ? thats well within spec. When you think about it must vary a little with tyre wear.

Amazing how hot the intake can get sitting in traffic ! Seen it go 25 deg over ambient and then drop to almost ambient again going down the highway .

Still working out the fuel trim thing as well.

I've got a 2003 Mazda 323 Astina BJ, trying to get a obd reader setup. Purchased a 16-17 pin patch cable as I don't seem to have a obd port under my Dash. My issue is after receiving the cable and obdII reader it doesn't seem to power on at all when the ignition is switched on. I've checked the fuses and nothings blown leaving me questioning if it the wrong obd reader and I need a obd I reader instead of a obd II or if I got the wrong cord.

Can someone shed a bit of light, as I was going to take it to a auto electrician but I tried my reader and cable on my brothers 121 with the same issue. Both cars do have aftermarket head units and my harness had a seriously bad hack job.

Link to port I'm using, It's the top connector
