Motor Bikes
so like im buying an mx5 soon and i need a daily drive when i do some heavy work on it. i recently got my bike learners and was thinking of getting a bike as a daily while i work on the mx5.
1 - is this a good idea as a daily, knowing there are idiots who dont shoulder check to see if there are any vehicles to their side. 2 - i was thinking either a CBR250 or a GS500... something under $5000 3 - what decent gear should i get that wont cost me an arm and a leg 4 - anyone on AGT have a bike? a few members have bikes...im about to sell the mini to get a bike...
im looking at 4 different ones now but lookin at brand new...a yamaha fz6r, kawasaki er6nl, kawasaki ninja 250 or a kawasaki 650rl... if your doing highway work get something bigger than a 400... gear i wouldnt skimp on it cause if you do and you have an accident its the only thing protecting you from the road/motor vehicles...

Hey mate,
I am a rider and am all for it!, but wouldn't suggest it as a daily. As for people not shoulder checking - you get used to it, you simply compensate for it by being aware of it and riding accordingly. You CAN'T rely on other's competence for your own safety. Also DO NOT skimp on gear, gloves, pants, jacket and BOOTS... All important stuff... I was very gear conscious and just as well because when I found my a$$ sliding on the road at 80click (my own fault) I was glad I had it on As for a bike, it's tough to get anything decent in the 250 range with a bit of kick. I ride the greyimport ninja which hammers hard, but you need to rev it past 12k to get any sort of get up and go. For a daily I would suggest something with a V-twin motor... Honda VTR250 is a good starter, and the hyosung Comet or GT250R are not too bad too (if you got extra coin go the GT650R as it's learner legal) If I was to have a daily on my L's it would have to be a V-twin as they make more low end torque and are easier to ride through traffic, where as mine is a little less responsive at low revs but can hold it's own when the revs are up... Also invest in a a simple slip on exhaust, a loud bike is a safe bike. People need to know you're there.

I have a couple friends from school that ride to and from work daily, and 5years on are still alive...
I've wanted a road bike for a while and seeing thsi thread spurred me on to have a look, and looking at the Yamaha XVS-650A road bike (LAMS Legal - dont have a licence yet nor ridden a bike in years), they suit the "Fat Bastard" look im going for

i ride dirt bikes but sometime road as well for many years (since i was 5)
anyway as for riding gear most companys come out with new stuff every year boots, helmets, gloves, body armour (which would be leathers for road road riding) etc then the last year gear gets sigficantly reduced prices the changes that are done year to year are only really cosmitic but like people said above i wouldnt cheap out on safety espically with your helmet Last edited by mkid; 03-03-2011 at 10:31 AM. |

If you want to be noticed, stick on a new muffler, thats usually effective in getting drivers attention, and if thats not enough, replace the standard horn with something a lil louder, like an air horn, scare the crap outta sum1!

motor bike exhuasts cannot be louder than 94db's by law
although many bikes are louder cops tend to come down harder on them and they look out for them more |

guys with harleys never get pulled over even though there louder than planes...pisses me off...but even with a LAMS bike you may not be able to put a new exhaust on it as it may put it over the power to weight ratio

problem with harleys is normally the people who ride them
generally the dont give a toss no matter what the cops say they get there exhuasts done to be as wide and short as possible they may as well be loud as harleys arent that fast nor do they handle very well and tend to leak oil like a sive |

if they have have finally came out with a new engine then they should be fine
they used the same Keihin CV carb(identical smaller version of the CVK-40) out of my 89 KLR250D kawasaki till 2000(ish) for instance kawa stopped using it after the KLR stopped production it was mainly for econemy not power. they were unreliable and needed to be cleaned every few months in standard form as they hated the tinyest amount of dust also made the bike very difficult to start harley only changed the jetting for bigger bores and used it new harleys these days are a lot better designed than they were |

they talk about it a little on here
http://www.gadgetjq.com/keihin_carb.htm ive also got another website somewhere with a listing of what cheap parts harleyused over the years from other manufactures which also helped to give them there unreliable image Last edited by mkid; 06-03-2011 at 02:24 PM. |

Two of my mate's have Hyosung GT650Rs, one of them has had it unrestricted so it goes much harder.
However, they seems to be something fishy with the odometers because both of them had less than 2000kms on them, being 3-4 years old too. The previous owners admitted it wasn't genuine kms. |

some people barely ride bikes, specially restricted cause they arestill learning and only ride them on weekends once a month...
spoke to a few people, as soon as you unrestrict the bikes you need to un register it and re register it under the unrestricted model...if you dont your insurance is void even though you may be on unrestricted licence as well... hyosungs are the only bike in aus that can be easily 100% unrestricted, but a cheap nasty bike to start with...
