Clem 7 Tunnel
Who has had a drive in it?
Saw the news and looks interesting. Lowest point is 60m under ground. It's free to travel and use it for another 10 days or something. I'm gonna drive it this coming Saturday morning. |

Yep, had a ball running through it at 3 am this morning, bugger all traffic. Huge amounts of amusement slowing to 50 km and then 2nd gearing it to 80 km, tunnel echo is win for noisy BA's hehe

Just so everyone knows:
I have worked on the Clem7 for the last 5 years as a traffic engineer. I am happy for any questions about the tunnel to be posted here. I will NOT answer any questions related to traffic volumes, however, I can provide some clarity on the general arrangement and operation of the tunnel. Cheers

Is the general speed limit going to be set at 80km as a maximum?
Do they vary that speed depending on traffic conditions/accidents? Is there anywhere we can read up on the radio broadcast system they use? |

I did the voyage down tonight, and can see that it will make a hell of a difference within the city, but not viable for me... I couldnt get anywhere near 70ks tonight @ 9pm, but shifting back to 2nd and letting the car catch up was awesome to the ear!

Theres actually 8, 4 in each direction
Probably the only place you could go for a 100km in an 80 zone and lose your license in less than 3 minutes |

Funny enough I never exceeded the 80 limit anywhere in the tunnel.
It is a nice drive, and it would be very easy to exceed the speed limit, but i found I was driving at about 50-70 most the way thru it. I did get to 80 at one stage. But that felt like it was speeding for some reason. |

ditto, must be due to the confined space of the tunnel I would think?
Question for Darryl, is it actually two tunnels or one big bugger?

http://www.clem7.com.au/content/2188/CONSTRUCTION
There are 2 tunnels, one going each way, and there was a separate boring machine for each tunnel. |

The level of traffic in the tunnel will govern the speed - heavy traffic leads to lower speeds etc. If there is an incident in the tunnel the variable speed signs will gradually slow traffic down as you approach the incident to allow safer braking. I don't know much about the radio broadcast system, but I did read somewhere that the major radio stations have a cut-in frequency that override the main signal with a short-range transmission.

I have a question, whats a traffic engineer? I mean the name sort of makes it obvious but what do you actually do?

- Strategic traffic modelling (across Brisbane City as a scale reference) - Micro-simulation traffic modelling (for intersections, road corridors, public transport etc) - Major road upgrades (highways, tunnels, urban upgrades) - Road/traffic impact assessments for development applications (mines, office blocks, industrial, residential, wind farms, pretty much anything else) I even assess other firms development applications on behalf of councils sometimes too - Parking studies which might be for a single parking area or across a city - Pedestrian / cyclist planning - Public transport planning Oh, and on the side I dabble in geospatial mapping.

Interesting. Never really realised there was so much to do with traffic, i understood that thered be flow studies and things like that. But didnt realise planning went down to that level.
