VICS opens up at about 5500rpm, and in the 1.8 atleast, the engine actually runs out of legs at about 5000rpm before VICS engages. So you get a 500rpm flatspot, not that that lasts long enough to really notice. But with ground cams in my 1.8, you would hear the tone of the engine change for that last 1000rpm, but I wouldn't say you could feel it.

Hi,

I've recently purchased an April 2003 protege sp20. My VIN lies inside the range listed at the start of this thread but when I went in to the Mazda dealership they said that this special service doesn't apply to my vehicle. Could the VIN range on this thread be wrong? Or is it just because the original warranty is up that it's not on record anymore? Looks like I'll have to pay for it myself, even though it's still under the statutory warranty. Any suggestions about what I can do?

I know this is old, but... I read here and elsewhere that the FS 2.0 effected by this has the butterflies screwed to the top of the shaft and not through it like it should have been done by Mazda. Is this right?

Because I had a look at a inlet manifold off a 2002 Astina SP20 (Aussie spec) and the butterflies are going through the shaft and not bolted to the top like it has been mentioned. I have a picture but this forum doesn't have attachments to posts (WT??).

Anyone confirm if this is how the butterflies are mounted on all the Aus spec 2.0 FS-DE's?

Anyone?
