Mazda 2 steering rack problems.
Knowing a few folk here have a DY Demio (Mazda 2) here's a heads-up on a potential steering rack prob...
Recently I've noticed that the steering in my Demio was getting a bit heavier, sometimes staring off very heavy. I was talking to another Demio owner who told me she was having the same trouble and that the rack was replaced on her 2s 40,000km service. I had my 30,000km service today and drove away with a new steering rack, when I asked if it was a known issue they confirmed that there was an issue with the racks and that they had done two today. BTW the Demio steering rack has electric power steering and it's an all in one unit.

Hey Rod,
On my recent 30k service they only adjusted the idle speed, and now it idles at around 600rpm (activematic). I get heavy steering for a while after startup, but it usually rectifies itself within seconds (after it's primed I spose), but this afternoon I was thinking that it was dragging on a bit longer than usual. I have been wondering if the cold weather lengthens the time it takes for the electric steering to prime. My build date is late 2006, and I've only had the idle speed correction, but not the front spring/seat replacement. If it's showing some problems by the time it's ready for it's 40k service, I will pursue Mazda to follow up on the problem. Cheers, Gav. |

My Genki was too early for the spring recall but if you're having steering issues then bring them up. It's amazing how light the steering is now
As for cold I've driven to work a few times recently in sub zero temps, heater and AC on full. I also learnt that the SVT (valve timing) cuts in at 3,250rpm

Since you mentioned SVT: Do you know if our SVT is truely Variable? As the recently obsolete Corolla only seemed to have 3 distinctive settings (off, stage 1, stage 2) on the car I drove (with 100kW 1ZZ) around Tassie.

all I know is I think I've got the problem.
I knew about it, but I don't care about it so well - I might do something about it. I've seen the whoel unit removed from a smashed one. the NEW price is not nice and the 2nd hand is not much better YET. Mines onyl a few months older I think too or should I say younger |
