My 1977 929 street/strip build

I have been meaning to start this thread for a while.. thoughts, questions, comment and critz are all welcome.

I always liked the old school mazda's and the prinicple of the rotary engine is also interesting and what better way to combine it all in a build car to use as a dedicated drag car as there is a drag strip 20mins from my house and the rex isn't really a straight line car.

So i found this 929 forsale with the 12a in it, in fairly good nick for a decent price (as anyone looking for an oldschool rotary would know there either wrecked or expencive) now the 929 came factory fitted with a 1.8 4cl and 5 spd manual. mine has been converted with a series 2 SA22C RX-7 12a and 5 speed manual box. Essentially making it an rx4 because the RX4 is a rotary powered 929.

THE PLANS.
What am i doing to it?? Well as the title says its a street/strip car because i have no where to park a car trailer so its gotta be registered and the old school mazda just look sweet when they cruise around.

13b Turbo
Extended Port (keeps it a little more street driveable)
3mm Apex Seals
Microtech ECU
yet to figure out which turbo i want to go for
3.5inch dump to a 3inch catback zorst
3 speed ratchet shift auto
Line Locker (roll control/launch control)
Bolt in Half Cage
Hilux Rear Diff
Autometer guages as far as the eye can see

and a heap of other stuff i cant think of atm

for now.
just going to repaint it and get it strip ready. So courtsey of rupe's jdm thread i have a pair Mazdaspeed Type-F seats, MS-01's staggered fitment 16x7 for the front with 16x8 for the back. My dad is building a bolt in chromoly half cage so i will be right to race all the way down to the 10.00 quarters. PWR Radiator and oil cooler when i drop the engine back in

So decided to start at the back and work my way forward when i stripped it down

mm this might need some attention, both sides are like that

the things you find in a 30 year old car

some MS goodies to go in when it all goes back together

now as i found who ever resprayed this car before me couldn't be bothered stripping it down and just taped the chrome trims and windows (there is paint on one of them) so a got a two tone going on in the doors

bought my self an orbital sander to take back the top layer of paint not taking it back to bare metal and i am not expecting it to turn out great its mainly for racing and will probably get a fully respray in another 5/8 years

and had a break from the sanding so resprayed all the interior plastics and rear beaver panel and front grille charcoal and tested fitted my tacho because the 929 sedan didn't come with a tacho

.

i only recently managed to get the quater panels and front end off so i am going to spray the inside of them black

the chrome work is also lacking proper care so i gave some of the smaller trims a quick polish and here is a before and after example

and as i said i got to sort out the engine wiring before i pull the engine out to do the engine bay and here is just one example of a reoccuring problem through out the engine bay

i didn't really wanna try and sand some of the smaller peices and works a little slow on fridays and we have a small sandblasting booth so i thought i'd put it to good use

and some of the other rust spots that were hidden by trims that need attention

with the help of my brother on saturday we got the motor ready to be lifted out. drained all the fluids took the radiator out disconnected all piping and electrical components.

As well as this on monday morning my Mazdaspeed seats and MS-01's rocked up XD will be a bit of work to get the seats to fit and even more so for the rims to fit. standard hilux diff on the back will sort the rear out but i am going to need some pretty wikid custom front hubs made up as i need to take the hub face out about another 3inches so the fronts will clear the struts

from left to right standard 13x5.5inch rim, MS-01 16x7, MS-01 16x8
weight wise a front and rear MS-01 together weight pretty much the same as one of the 13's

LOL 3 inches extra hub? I wondered what you'd be doing hubwise considering the stock PCD is 4x110 (or is it 4x120?)

haven't really updated this in a while so thought i might, no photo's atm though.

the body is completely primmed and i have a custom mixed blue acrylic paint and should start edging it in maybe next weekend,

i have on order complete set of new struts and stage 1 lowered springs, they should be here in a week roughly

and made the most interesting discovery the other day as well. turns out that while my hubs are a 4x110 there is an intermediate plate between the brake disc and the wheel and the brake disc are a 4x100 bolt pattern then this plate changes it to a 4x110 and spaced the wheel out about 20mm from the hat of the brake rotor.

How bizarre! Would make it easy to go 4x100 then with the right offset rims. Shame your wheels are 5x114.3!

that's a shame... but what about the rears tho.. as they are hubs they wouldn't have that adapt plate would they???

yes you would think so but the plate is part of the hub design itself so it has to be kept on there. and the hilux diff will be 5x114.3 so that solves the problem for the rears and the fronts will be upgraded when i do a bigger brake upgrade either custom hubs or get some of another car retrofitted

no the rears dont have the plate but the hats (outside bit for the drum, forgot its name) for the rear brakes have a 4x110 pattern

haven't really kept you all up to date on this. but here is how the car sits atm

it runs just smokey so the motor has to come out again for a rebuild which there is a guy locally for me who has build an injected 13b monster port and is currently doing another injected 13b. so once its done i should be all sweet

i had huge drama's with the front brakes as i couldn't find parts so guy from sydney hooked me up with a custom set up using holden camira brakes

there is a heap more photos in the photobucket album if you guys want to check it out
