BG stalling, overheating and electrics problems... related?
Ok, so...
Today went out for little cruise with RedlineResident and car started to play up. Bout 5-10mins into a hills drive the handbrake light, charge and another warning light were illuminated and the temp guage started to skyrocket. I pulled over and turned off the car to let it cool down and hoped the problem would correct itself. Temp returned to normal then I took off again only to have it heat right up again and have to park and cool it down again. Anyway, I started to head for home, being very soft with the car. Stopping whenever the temp gauge got above 4/5+. Twice I turned off a main road to prepare to pull over and the car just died mid turn and I lost power steering. It would coast to the curb and fail to start. 4-5 minutes later, the temp was back to normal and it started. Quite often, when it would start, the idle was dodgey. Its never great but in nuetral it would rev itself to 1-1.5 before dropping right down to 400ish rpm, near stalling and up again Got it all the way to a mates place like this, then went inside. Came out 10-15 minutes later... tried to start the car and wouldn't start. Walked home, came back couple hours later with Dad and jump started the car. Seemed to be ok, idle was really solid and everything was going well. Stopped at an intersection, lights went green, tried to take off... the car stuttered big time at 5-10kmph through the intersection barely moving and chugging something cronic. Managed to get over to the side of the road and had Dad come back and jump start me before making a dash back for home. Made it no dramas but of course the car won't start now. I'm assuming the alternator/battery is dead which caused the starting issues. But my question is, after this mammoth recount, could ALL of these problems come back to the battery/alternator? I'm talking about the warning lights, high temp gauge readings, mid turn stalling? I hope so anyway, will make the fix easier. Thanks in advance for your responses. |

with my car everytime the three lights on the dash you mentioned have come on it has been something to do with my alternator
more recently i snapped an alternator belt, even tho it was only bout 2 minutes from home i noticed the revs were very high when limping home and id assume the water pump etc is run off that belt which caused the temp guage to skyrocket hopefully that helps a bit mark |

yep it certanly is your alternator buddy, its either the belt or the alternator itself. The alternator belt also runs the water pump so that explains the high temp and most of the other things are caused by low voltage warninig signals, they are a breeze to change, just get a reco'd one from any wreckers or auto electricians...

You guys can give yourselves a pat on the back and a big tick next to your long range diagnosis! Spot on, alternator belt snapped, stopping water pump and causing all the problems.
$50.00 to fix and she's good as new! |
