Clickady Clack Train Track
I'm getting a noise that sound very similar to the noise trains make running over joins in the train tracks.
The engine is a BP and mounted transalxe. The engine has done 170,000km. Oil levels all good. It is intermittent and comes on for 5-10 seconds, then dissappears for 5-30 seconds at idle. Very hard to hear with the bonnet down, but bonnet up, it's loud enough to know is coming from the front of the engine near the timing gear. Did the little screwdriver to the ear trick on what objects I could:- alternator - nothing ac compressor - faint ps pump - faint drivers engine mount - very clear to hear Am I right in saying that my oil pump is on the way out? |

I'd have thought oil pump would be an even sound that rises/falls with rpm. The only dead one i've heard was a nasty grinding
Do you have HLA's or shim & bucket? Could be a sticky lifter/s if its the former. The 3000gt has one, will 'tick' very loudly (think cartoon bomb) at idle sometimes. A good rev and its gone for a while. Have you checked the belts? Could be something dodgy with them. Couldn't think of anything else that would give an 'uneven' sound

I've got SOBs.
Its lower engine noise, not upper. Someone suggested idler or tensioner. But those are normally a light squeel. |

was going to say bearing.
I'm lucky most of the time it's on machines that are away from the main noise. but On some of my robots and other packaging items you either don't get the speed up to get it or when you do it's because of a variable speed drive and on -off system it's not right. Usually takes totaly break down. Oil-pumps when they **** - THEY ****. So if you have pressure and engine it's not it. From my experience even a run around the block is enough once the pump goes. |
