the coils will die prematurely if you have bad spark plugs or bad leads... this is why I recommend replacing EVERYTHING... plugs and leads are wear and tear items... many people don't know this, but this is true! The coils will work harder and eventually die!

one other possibility is a short in the wiring.... a mate's car had some dodgy wiring behind the ECU panel and I found out an earth wire that was spliced was no longer insulated from the floorboard... this short caused one coil to be constantly energized while the key was turned "ON" but engine off and melted it! He learned a good lesson that day about doing electrical work properly on his car! I taped up that wire really good and it's been fine since!

Check the earth connector on the right hand side of the head. I have seen this come loose and cause issues on our cars as well.

It would usually kick back into life after a few minutes and drive fine, but this morning the problem persisted for 15 minutes until I got to work.

In the evening when I drive home from work, it drives fine (so far).

All I've done thus far is replace the spark plugs, which made no difference.

Any thoughts on what the problem might be?

Would really appreciate some advice!

it is a bad idea to post in more than one thread of your problem, mate... it makes it hard for everyone to direct answers to you.... one thread and one thread only is always the best!

FYI, I replied to the thread you had created

Google brought me here, although i was already a member. Super helpful thread, found several cracks in the hose from the airbox. Gaffer tape has given me a quick fix while I wait for a new hose. Cheers guys.

I had that problem when I first bought my BJ-II, car would shudder like it's losing power, revs would drop then cut out!
I just did a service on the car myself, flushed out old oil, changed oil filter, put in new oil (magnatec), coil packs + spark plug leads + spark plugs replaced.
Ran like a dream after that along with my K&N filter.

So i experienced the drop in cylinders on my way home from work the other day. Was on the highway and took the nearest exit. After replacing the spark plugs i drove home with the car still running rough as guts. Was about a 10 minute drive. I have now replaced the coil packs and topped the oil up and its back to running smoother than ever.

My concern now is in regard to cat damage. Firstly, what should i look for to determine if I have actually caused an issue? I couldn't afford to replace anything even if I wanted to so I'm really hoping nothing is wrong.

Thanks everyone.

Well i replaced the two ignition coils. Car was running smoother than ever. Was short lived though. Only about an hour into driving one of the coils melted. Any ideas where i can go from here? Not exactly sure where i should be checking to find why this happened.

I'd recommend a "free" check at any Auto electrician regarding your alternators voltage & amperage output - One or the other or BOTH may be high ?

sadly its a common thing for the sp20 coils to melt due to to much heat in the engine bay.. when they melted the second time was the turtle cover (big black plastic thing that bolts on top of the valve cover) on the motor?

also some photos of these melted coils would be nice so we can get an idea as to how they have melted.

Just thinking out loud.

So come summer I should take cover Off?

Would low octane fuel cause motor to run hotter?( as well as ping)

are you seeing the engine run hotter on the temp sensor on the dash??

honestly i have never seen an engine run hotter due to the octane rating of fuel. i have seen it from over fueling tho.
