KF 2.0 Engine Swap or Recondition?
Hi guys,
I have a 94 BA hatch with the 2.0 KF V6 and she is blowing butt loads of smoke (i've been told valve stem seals and possibly oil rings are done). I am sitting at almost 260000 km's on the clock and I am about to run into financial difficulty due to starting uni this year full time. What I was hoping to find out... would it be 'better/cheaper' for me to get an entire replacement engine or get my engine rebuilt? I have been qouted roughly $2200 to get a replacement with only 110000 km's on it from a local guy here in Brisbane. Thanks in advance! |

and how can you tell that he is being honest about the kms ?
Or that he even knows for sure I'd get a rebuild. Perhaps you can do a lot of the prep yourself to make it cheaper ? Like removing the engine from the car |

the rebuild is always the better option for long but a top end only V a full rebuild is always and issue.
it's also not uncommon for the V6 motors to suffer after a rebuild of just the heads. when I say suffer never the same. as for another 2nd hand unit. yes it's proberly your best bet. but I know ofr fact KF and KL motors are quite cheap overall. a mid km's engine really is only worth approx $300 to sydney wreaker they may sell it for double a minimal but that's all it's really worth. Some mazda specialist have so many ones they keep complete others they steal parts from. Not the best car to buy on limited budget but IMO if your not thrashing the crap out of it a low to mid km' 2nd hand motor should get you out of trouble and cheapest but make usre you do the water pump and timing belt now. other then that buy another car. I've got 3 BA v6's un rego'd sitting around my area 1 has big rims and council sticker - a HT with Jap bar on front and a green hatch with now it's intercooler missing and council sticker. |

After being in much the same situation when I started uni, I would suggest getting a completely rebuilt exchange engine, if you are about to start uni, you don't want to keep fixing things by doing a half assed engine job.
That price is crazy high though, we got a completely rebuilt engine from RPM fitted in one day for $2.2k with 3yrs unlimited warranty. The thing was bulletproof and not a problem, and rebuilt back to new specs with new parts in it. I did much the same with another car, and no issue. My brother has twice put a 2nd hand engine in and both times they were such a hassle that he has had to sell the car, the money and pain he spent ended up being a lot more than if he had just exchanged it for a rebuilt one. |

theres a joint in Sydney that does full swaps, drop in drop out for $1,200 which includes 6 mths warranty..
Not sure why it's a grand dearer in Bris, if anything, should be cheaper there. Might be worthwhile to drive down, change engine, (takes full workingh day) and drive home at night. So, leave bris at 9pm, arrive sydney 8am, drop car in, crash somewhere, drive home 6pm get to brisvegas around 5am. That way only takes 2 days, have nice little adventure and save about $600 after added fuel costs.
