Engine smoking after drive

3 nights ago i was driving my stock 1997 ba hardtop, and apparently revved it too hard and may have rode that clutch as there was a terrible stank coming from my car for a while.
Now for the next two days everytime i arrive home after driving my car soft, i can smell the same smell just less intense.
Today i opened my bonnet just after i got home and had the same smell and there was a barely noticeable stream of smoke or steam or something coming out of the engine. i felt like it was out of the fill cap but not too sure.
Also worth mentioning is the my coolant system is iffy. I have to top it up maybe once a month which isn't that much but still seems to frequent. And i can't seem to see any evidence that it is leaking out the bottom

So, anyone hazard a guess as to what the problem is...

probably a coolant leak or oil leak.

Could also be an exhaust leak but you would probably hear the difference. You can tell for sure because an exhaust leak would smoke as soon as you start the engine, but the others won't show smoke until the engine heats up enough to burn the leaking fluid.

If the smoke is quite white then its probably coolant. Oil should have a stronger smell I think.

I would take a look around and see if you can find any leaks. Get under the car and you might see where its dripping.

It would be obvious if it were at the front so get under the car and look up between the engine and the firewall, under and around the intake manifold.

what he said,
you're almost certainly smelling coolant.
look for wet spots immediatley after a drive and see where the leak is form.
If you were flogging the t!ts of it you may have overheated it and popped the cap so make sure it's secured.
Now, youur next series of problems will be a blown head gasket.
enjoy
