4-2-1 isnt necessarily best.

basically if you get the front of the system right, the backend isnt as much of a concern

4-1 is the other option.

if there was a really good 4-1 header for the sp20 i would have gotten that, but unfortunately there isnt.

the freer flowing the system is the more power, but you want to keep the gas speed up, so going with a 3" exhaust would suck as the gas speed wont be quick enough, 1.5" exhaust will have killer speed gas, but wont be able to flow enough. no need to go any more than a 2.25" mandrel on a 1.8 engine

the muffler guy i went to gave me a 2' Mandrel... he said it would be silly to got any higher...

And now i got a twin Dump pipe tip... and i wanna get Extractors..

but i was lookin at High flow cats and that special tips which improve flow...

So i get confused with exhausts... ppl say 2.25 is best others say too much =P

whats 4-1 benefit more towards.. cause doesnt 4-2-1 go more to torque ?

i also went for 2", in stainless.
mainly coz i didn`t fit any middle mufflers, just the REMUS back box, but we don`t have cats in the BG until `92.
jetex and remus seem mainly to go for exhausts which are likely to give more power rather than just sound good.
i had my remus back box on the car before i done the stainless mid-section and it wasn`t really much louder than the standard one, if any louder.

4-1 headers you can tune to give you max power in a particular range, usually top end which is why they have that sort of reputation. 4-2-1 headers reduce pumping losses because basically an engine is a complex pump. so it's helping the engine work better through the entire rev range. the problem with that is to design a 4-2-1 correctly takes a real lot of work. 4-1's are easy to make and design.
