Question Gnd and ten question

Hi guys Im a newbee here, but loving the site so far
have also acquired alot of technical advice from the previous threads.
Anyway mu question is, I have tried the GRND and TEN bridging and then set my idle control screw as desired, which as i found even improved the overall performance of my vehicle, probably my car had been sucking in too much/little air. Ive done this once or twice so far,each with good results, however the problem I find is that the setting does not last for long, and every other week I find I have to go back and adjust it again.
Has anybody else experienced this prob?
Or am I doing something wrong?
Or possibly missing a step or something?

First of all why do you need to adjust idle speed that often ? what are the symptoms ? Once the base idle speed is set no need to adjust it over and over again.


Your method is correct but base idle is regulated by the idle air control (IAC) valve once you disconnect the jumper wire. The ECU controls the idle speed by adjusting the IAC based on the information it receives through other sensors. If your IAC is clogged up with carbon build up (very common) then you are likely to have erratic or rough idle. Check your IAC valve and clean it with carbie cleaner together with your throttle body (specially the idle bypass path that goes through idle adjuster screw)

I have found something similar on mine. I adjusted the idle using the above method maybe 4 months ago, after it was idling quite low (as low as 450 at times). It was great for a while, idled at 750-850 as it's meant to, but over time it has slowly been getting lower and now is heading for 500 depending. Should I check my IAC valve? It doesn't idle rough or erratic, just low.

Hi there asanga, thanks for the reply. please explain when you say remove the jumper wire...what exactly do you mean?
could be so kind as to give me the steps in order that i should follow?
and do I have to remove the actual iac valve? or can i just remove the pipe and spray with carb cleaner? bcos i have noticed the screws that hold the iac valve screw form underneath, and there is now way of getting screwdrivers in there. so the only way i could see is to remove the whole throttle body to do that?

Removing the jumper means disconnecting the temporary connection between TEN and GND.
1. warm the engine up to normal operating temperature.
2. turn the ignition off and short the TEN and GND (jumper wire between TEN and GND). this puts the ECU into diagnostic mode.
3. start the engine and adjust the idle (base idle) using idle adjuster screw. also check the ignition timing if you have a timing light. You can correct the timing at this stage if required.
4. turn the ignition off and remove the temporary connection between TEN and GND.
5. start the engine and check if your idle is steady. ECU takes over and regulates the idle speed now. It could slightly drop below or above the base idle you set earlier .


To clean the IAC you can remove the intake pipe and spray with carb cleaner and let it soak and keep repeating until its clean. But the best way is to remove the valve and clean it. the screws are coming from underneath and to remove the IAC u have to remove the throttle body.

Now i understand where I was going wrong, as I was heating the car, then shorting the TEN & GND whilst idling. and then switching off the car. Have done it the way as you as advised now and will keep you posted.

The IAC valve I tried this morning, I went the simple route first, of spraying the inlet from where I removed the pipe. when I started the car, it was very rough and almost as though it had a miss, (for about 2min) then I took it out for a spin, and it cleared up. I plan to spray it again tonight, and see what happens.
Silly question here, but was it normal for the car to react in that way after spraying the inlet?

Yeah man if you spray too much it will die completely but it is normal for it to struggle. When I did it I had dad in the car touching the throttle if it dipped too far

yeah when ive done it, i had to hold the throttle open with one hand and spray with teh other..

o ok so you guys all sprayed the iac valve whilst the engine was running?
and did it help with the eratic idle
