Slight smoke on cold start
Had a new little issue with my troublesome 4cyl BA hardtop.
Occasionally on startup I get a couple of seconds of exhaust smoke. I know it is smoke and not just water vapour as I can smell it when I reverse through it. Gone after a couple of seconds. The car runs well, it is low kms (150,000), good compression on all cylinders, nice and smooth through the rev range and at idle (has a slight miss when it gets down to about a quarter tank at the moment which I assume is to do with some poor quality fuel), no oil leaks as I had valve cover and dizzy seals replaced at the last service, no water leaks as I replaced the steel hose that goes to the front of the motor just after the last service, no loss of fluids. Could it just be clearing cr@p out of the exhaust? |

yep valve stem seals. Not sure if you can do a BA without head removal. but you might be able too. Some engines you can more easily then others but it usually better to reco the lot.

could also be stuck piston rings due to carbon build up... an engine flush might fix or reduce it... best method is slow cleaning using something like autorx (hard to get), but fast cleaning also works to a limited extent, at the risk of loosing up too much crap and stuffing the motor
if after that's attempted, then it's either worn piston rings or valve seals

Thanks guys. No smoke after the first couple of seconds, and doesn't seem to be all the time. Doesn't appear to have ever been driven hard and was used mostly short distances for the last few years so hopefully I am just loosening up some deposits by putting a fair few km on it at the moment.
