Mazda Service - Worth it?
Hi all! My v6 BA is due for its 140k service. It's been serviced at the Mazda dealer its entire life prior to my ownership, it was fortunate enough to be paid for as a company car, then its second owner worked @ mazda itself.
I gave mazda a call asking what needs to be done @ 140k, and apparently it's just going to be a minor service, aka engine oil and filter changes, then xx number check. I also wanted to know when other items were changed, eg spark plugs, leads, brake and gearbox fluids, etc... and was told that the Major service @ 160k would handle that - also apparently Mazda give iridium spark plugs replaced every 100k???? Can anyone verify this please? Bottom line is, should I bother sending it back to Mazda which I am sure will cost me my left nut, or should I look elsewhere? I do intend to keep the car long term, ie for at least the next 3-5 years. |

mazda charged us $240 for the 10,000km service on the 3, oil + filter + top us fuilds + car wash. most mechanics will charge $100-$120 for that.
i doubt mazda us iridium plugs - the that would cost the owner $100 extra. i will not be taking the 3 back to mazda ever for any other service. a car wash is not worth $120... ryan Last edited by project.r.racing; 05-10-2008 at 07:48 PM. |

Mazda dont use Iridium plugs unless you request and pay the extra. Iridiums are only ever used in the RX-8's, NC MS-5's standard.

You will most likely find they use platinum plugs in the v6 hence why they are only changed every 100,000 kms reason being getting to the rear plugs maybe a bit hard . It still works out around the same price either way you go most dealers replace standard plugs @ 20,000 km to 30,000 kms and at $5 per plug = $30 x 5 = $150 .
Platinum plugs about $25 per plug x 6 = $150 |

Erm safety check...at work that just involves checking wipers, lights etc....nothing special. |

Hmmm I thought it'd involve various other things, like checking level of other fluids, stuff like how much of the brake discs are left, under body inspection for leaks etc... And not to mention there's the issue of tuning?
What does everyone think? are these things necessary or just fluff to 'increase value' on the price of the service? |

tuning?
brake discs and underside inspection are all done on the MOT engine fluid levels are checked....you get the oil change, filter change, sometimes spark plugs and leads depending on which service heres the checklist you'll need : http://www.club323f.com/ba/guides/se.../servicing.php |

same goes for leaks? crawl on the ground and have as look under your car. again, eyes? tuning? you got a carby feed car with no knock sensor? otherwise it self tunes while you drive using all the info from the 100s of sensors relayed back to the euc, and then the ecu adjusts the tuning itself. yes it is all to fluff up the price. use your eyes and save yourself $100+ per service. ryan |

i always wonder when u go to a dealer for a serivce at the amazingly long list of things that are "checked" and "tightened". Wonder if anything is ever done.
Have been servicing my own cars for years now, and am yet to come across a loose nut, but i still check all those i can get to

No! unless its for warranty purpose there is no point in taking it to the dealership unless a mate or relo works there? my brother works for mazda and even he tells me its funny what they charge for a service...(this is in relation to the first post)

Righty-o. Now just to extrapolate the topic, what would I need to change the oil and the oil filter on the KF? Tools (wrench, socket, sizes?)? Recommended brand of filter, engine oil? Car is just my daily, seldom pushed above 4K rpm if that helps... Also is the oil sump plug and oil filter itself easy to locate and remove? I saw a set of filter removal tools (oil pan, funnel, some filter removing tool) on some catalogue would it be worth it?
Finally my biggest fear is the engine falling on me and crushing my face. Are 2 jack stands enough to save my life? |

2 stands = $30
oil pan = $5 filter wrench = $10* - 5L oil = $35 filter = $10 * = depending on whether you have the Z436 or Z79A filter, the Z436 filter is so small that a normal hand can turn it without a problem, there is no need for a wrench in this case. the Z79A filter will require you to purchase a large wrench. you only use 4L of oil, so you'll have some spare. ryan |

Repco
I've a BA V6 and it's recently had it's 140K service. I use Eddie at Auburn Repco.
Not only is he cheaper than mazda, the main thing is that is a small workshop and he and the other mechanics know me and the history of my car. I've jjust recently bought my wife a new Nissan and it's just done 10K ..... took it to Nissan and they did'nt do anything I asked, on top of all that, i got charged $12 for Bug Off! I gave them one chance and they blew it! |

there's nothing wrong with the work that mazda do methinks, it's just the price they charge for their labour... you can get the same service list done for probably half the price elsewhere.
And methinks it's the fan belt you hear, not the timing belt? I'm no expert though. BY the way - is the oil filter easy to locate under the car? as in, I can crawl under, and within 2 minutes of browsing around, go 'Hey there it is!' or do I have to squint through gaps etc? |
