Exhaust recomendation for SP20

Hi guys. I have so far been a lurker on here for awhile. But recently got a K&N panel air filter ops: hehe and now want to get something on the exhaust.

I drive a 2003 Astina SP20 and was wondering if it is worth changing to some sort of cat back, or is the standard piping alright just to get a decent muffler for.

Allllso, on top of that can anyone recommend a place to get it done... much preferred to be vaguely near Essendon (Melbourne)

I'm after something a little louder than I have now (not extreme) and a bit more performance... Budget is up to about $500

Cheers

Michael

Welcome aboard lurker, I mean Michael, I mean Moo Moo (reference to silly cow or mad cows disease????? )

The guys here are great at helping out, and am sure they will be able to give you some good advice.

Don't be afraid of asking dumb questions but do remember one thing, I am the Queen of Dumb Questions around here! No one takes the title away from me without a fight!!!

LOL

Good work on the K&N, did you notice an improvement in performance? Was there much of a change in noise for you in the SP20? I noticed in mine there was certainly a difference but I also did a CAI. Are you going to do the same?

Best of luck on the start of your mod addiction, and welcome to what will be the most encouraging website of them all..... here they can show you how to spend your hard earned money hand over fist and love every second of doing it!!!

Cheers, and look forward to seeing you on the boards!

moomoo - try looking at the www.protege5.com forum - much more stuff available from america, if you're willing to pay.

but you really cant go wrong with a custom setup. for $500 you arent going to get much. prob cat back w/o resonators, definately not mandrel bent

wouldn't he be better off spending the money on a good muffler for now, and getting the rest later?

that's what I would do

*says she getting headers first, talk about backwards, LOL*

there isnt much difference in mufflers apart from sound if they are a straight through design...personally i'd spend $500 on a cai or springs or cams

I haven't actually noticed any difference as of yet with the K&N... will have to disconnect the battery for a bit and see if that resets anything enough to notice a change

hmmmm, as for challanging for the title of dumb questions....
*mOomOo puts up his dukes*
What is a CAI?
ops:

Maybe I should just go a muffler then... Has anyone had any dealings with proffesional exhausts in airport west??

And Kitty is realing.....
CAI Cold Air Induction
On the understanding that cold air is denser air and with more oxygen in the cylenders the ECU will add more fuel, more air and fuel = more power.
A CAI will duct air from the front of the car (infront of the radiator) or in direct air flow to the air filter. Mine cost under $10 including paint.
Come along to a cruise to see what others have done.

Exhaust

Lots of stuff is available in the US, bigger population, more cars.
This is one on offer from racing beat
Stainless exhaust looks good, sounds good, adds 4.7hp atw and is $449 US

That's just an example (you could posably get it imported by Selectmaz in Epping).

If you go to Hitech in Melbourne they would do a full stainless steel cat-back with a nice muffler for about $720 (a quote I got a while back from the Sydney guys).

Would be as good as the Racing Beat above for sure.

Save a couple $100 and probably look and sound just as cool.

What details do you have for Hitech?

Hmmm crazy stuff...

So how restrictive do you guys think the stock exhaust is? I'm not going to be doing any crazy mods to the engine... One of my collegues at work reacons just getting a decent muffler for the back would be the most cost effective sollution as he reacons the stock exhuast shouldn't be that restrictive... It's already mandrel bent isn't it? Anyone know the size?

*looks over at kitty kat smack with my possibly dumb questions...*

hahahaha...how restictive....hahahahahaha

my dyno run with cai and a few other goodies 103.5whp
with very big cams and head work - 111.3whp (actually got 113.5whp but that was on the first pull - they didnt keep the records because 113.5 was right and i mean right at redline)

the stock exhaust sucks. with a full exhaust (header back) i'll should be getting close to 140-150whp. would be the most powerful NA sp20/protege5 streetdriven in the world that i know about.

just dont forget, a system is only as strong/powerful as it's weakest link. yes the cat back will help, but before the cat is a big restriction

andrew.

Keep in mind that unless you want to go to 150kw straightaway (and the extensive mods required) then you would loose power by going over the top with your zorst. Ballance your mods and get steady improvements.

yeah - 150whp on the sp20 is around 150kw at the engine. to get that i would have spent around $4k + or - . good thing i have done as much work as possible myself! otherwise that figure would be $5-6k

For a simple mod, I reckon a 2" mandrel-bent system is plenty, just a bit bigger than stock without losing bottom end power.

www.hitechmufflers.com

They have 2 places in Sydney, one in Brissy.
(sorry I thought the "other one" was Melbourne).
A mate with a Mazda 6 has one of their (twin) systems, is a lovely thing and makes a stupid amount more hp on the dyno.

Moohead...

Performance exhaust in Ringwood, Daaldar Exhausts, a few others... when i got quotes for my exhaust on 2" mandrel bent, mild steel with muffler + tip, it was 550-650 from about 4 different places.

Not sure about any in Essendon though!!

Cheers,
Bill
