Which insurance do you use?

Hi all, what with the getting of the SP and whatnot, I need to organise a new insurance policy. As an L plater on the SOHC I was covered (and still am, for a while at least) by GIO, at a pretty reasonable rate - I think it was around $750.

But now as a P plater, and with the SP, the same policy would cost nearly $1500 because of their ridiculous premiums - $400 for my age, $500 for being a P-Plater, $100 for the mods on my car (cat-back exhaust, CAI, steering wheel, mag wheels), and $250 to have my dad as a listed driver.

So what does everyone here have for insurance?

AAMI $1300. make sure you're on the policy if you're under 25, quite a few insurers won't pay out if you're under 25 and not on it, even if its comprehensive

Third Party with RACQ $340 or something. Can't afford comprehensive (approx 2500).

I didn't bother with a quote for comprehensive insurance because i knew it would be too much (im a p plater) and i was given my car anyway.

I've got Extended 3rd Party though with Allianz, costs me $750.
Don't wanna hit a BMW and end up with a $10 000 bill do i now.

Shannons sounds good in theory but I'm only 21, and all drivers must be at least 25.

Shannon is great if your. over 25 - fine

but for me - Record - KILLS
Plus read the fine print on the cheap cover even classic cover. My cars old enough. - 5000km's a year only.

Now I don't like AAMI - no choice of repairer.

one of my best advies is get a good repairer and use them.
It works out long term.

I use NRMA.

Would you belive your probelry all paying less than me and I have multicar policy. Plus Green slips.

I had a quote as it's new first time Green slip for the wagon. old one GIO- lovely $700 - NRMA first quote didn't tell them details like I've got other policies etc $790
2nd call worked out at $650.
tha'ts only green slip. Don't want my 3d party property or comprehnsive quotes on any of my cars.

best one was MX-6 worth $10k - premium $10K- love it

It all varys on your situation.

first off you made a few mistakes

you told them of the mods.
Most people don't relise - the right modification is legal under policy.

EG Canoon - NO
Hi flow muffler fitted correclty with nice tips - yes No need to tell.

intake - hi flow filter inside stock box - allowed no need.

suspension - as long as no major changes - say sliglhty lowered springs - replaced worn items.

Don't bother, insurance companys don't care about steering wheels etc. They might not cover you but.

is it worth an extra $100 a year to cover items like them - even mag wheels.
I've got mags in my back yard sitting around with good tyres on them too. original price retail (not what I paied)$1200 tempe tyres. Now worth I don't care. maybe $400. Who knows. never insured them. What for. Damge buy a new set for what now 17's are like retail $800.

if you CAI is just pipe -replacing the stock intake. unless it was major accident and you did something stupid. Your car is so old it's written of anyway.

You would think I'd cry saying get it etc.
but look at my old BA astina -
Before written off
Had brand new eibach's - kyb's whiteline rear bar.
CAI - custom - air filter full serviced engine still clean oil even on 5000km change still clear.
17's.
The only winner when it was gone was wreaker who bought it at auction. As every part was worth it.
NRMA just let my panel beater quote it was gone before they got to the out side body work. Lucky only payed one year of insurance on it.

Here are few other tips for all

Not at fault got the other guys full details. Dont' claim on your policy. Always on theres, Again your personal panel beater and your personal assesor can come in.
understand just because they say it costs $6000 - they don't always quote new parts. OR your personal parts.

2nd tip
Read the policy books, makes smart modificatiosn for your car. If oyu don't have the money aim to achive both performance and economy. That means all round economy
Wasting $100 on tell insurance companys about modifications that aint' worth it.

think about it like this.
One of my cars rims get ripped off. put a claim in for what wheels say $1000 worth excess =(not mine) but $500
now they check the value etc and may pay out your $1000 but did that cover the tyres ( read fine print - usually wear items not covered, it's why shocks in accident cars don't need to be replaced new )

The steering wheel for example is not only worth nothing street market wise, to insurance company it's just another $100 they have taken.

Ask your selves this quesiton how often is a aftermarket wheel stolen these days ?
Not often - Same as stereo's

Most common - Air bag wheels (thats stock that's always covered as you can't change it anyway)
Stereo's equipment devalues so quickly, again Smart choices mean it aint' going to be taken.

When your young have little money one should think about how much is it worth for me to have all this covered.

Insurance compnay takes a risk assesment and as a customer you should too.

Risk managment, Car's devalue so quickly and it's so easy to make them targets. Making the right choices allows you reduce the risk and the associated costs.

Remember, dan is an old fart being over 30

I have Allianz with the sp20, its $90.94 a month, better than when I was with scumcorp, they wanted $147/month when I pranged my car & claimed a windscreen! That price with allianz is under my old mans name, with me being the nominated driver...

Going to be changing to RACQ in October, so that I can register and insure it all under my name, it'll go up to $105/month but would prolly drop again in december, I would have had been driving for 5 years...

Haha nah, Shannons had to match what Just Cars was charging me which was about 750 last time. It is over 10 years old, and agreed value is 14k.
And i think the Beetle's only insured for about 4 or 5 grand.

OMG... there are way too many insurance companies to choose from. I just want a decent price to insure my first car (when I actually buy one) but I'm in no rush for that as I'm on my L's at the moment. But seriously, insurance is hard work to understand at times. Good job RodHog analysed it for me because I know I'll be doing it up the best I can. I'm still looking around for some decent BA's around Newcastle/Sydney that aren't red! Anyone know of any??

Thats a bit steep, how old are you? Not really much of a comparison, but my brother is 19 and just bought a 2003 Holden Commodore S and is paying something like $188, or a bit over $2000/year... Why I brought it up was that its a V6, but it could be high aswell cause its a commodore & he's 19

lol he tried to argue with me about why mines so cheap compared to his, he couldnt get it into his head that I have a 4cyl & not a 6!

Lol, I'm paying... like (cant remember) around $2600 in premium with a $1000 excess

With Justcar,

AAMI were more expensive (even though Justcar is run by AAMI... go figure)

NRMA are through the roof
