OMG. Can't Believed This Happened. MUST READ!
Ok. Here we go, read & comment.
Today it was my Mum's birthday, we decided to go out for lunch to the Norman Hotel for a steak. It was great, on the way back we decided stop off at the Magic Mile to check out some cars. We took a v6 1996 BA Hardtop for a test drive, it was a nice car and in good nick. There was something going on with the front suspension tho, it was a very bumpy ride. That was our only complaint. So the guy said he would take us to another car yard where he had some other cars we might like. We quickly found a Mitsubishi FTO, It was in a beautiful condition. We took it for a test drive, however there where only 4 seats so it was me, dad and my 2 brothers. It was such a nice car, ran awesome was so smooth. The only thing is I think it should be only legal for 2 people, not much room in the back seat. 2.0 V6 MiTEC = 147kW Anyway, we decided to get it, after a little haggling mum knocked a grand off the price so it was 9000. Now so far, so good. Here is where it all goes horribly wrong. The car was meant for my 2 younger brothers to learn in. They are currently 15. One was gonna pay $3000 & he would get the car when he got his P's. I asked if I could be added as a named driver, which is what I am now with my Astina so I could drive it if Mark(younger brother) wanted to go to the movies or whatever with a friend I could drive him, in his own car. Wow, its a good idea that we decided this now, because if we had decided when he had got his license he would be without a car. NOBODY would insure it with a 17yo P Plater. The only people who would where "Just Car Insurance", which are owned by AAMI to my understanding. $2086 /year Fully Comprehensive. Shannon's would do it when I'm 18 for $1700 We called the guys back at the car yard. He said he would ask his manager in the morning if we could swap it for another car. I doubt we would get our money back though, maybe another car. LESSON LEARNT - DO YOUR HOMEWORK. CHECK THE PRICE OF PARTS! CHECK INSURANCE COSTS.' ^Maybe it was just my family who where not expecting all this. It has the same size engine with the same number of cylinders as my Astina so this was such a shock. The average price on a 1995 FTO on Carsales, Carpoint etc is $15,000. Its only done 110k kms. So if anyone wants to buy a new car hehe PM me. (Insurance for my dad is $700 Fully Comp, Rating 1 Driver). Comments, Ideas, Help anyone? |

It's a Japanese grey import - so insurance is always going to be higher - and as you found out, virtually no-one is willing to insure someone that young with a car that wasn't sold by the parent company in Australia.
It's just a CE Lancer anyway

When it comes to repairs the parts on something like an FTO are more difficult to source, more expensive and the car will sit longer at the repair shop. So being more expensive to repair it will be reflected in premiums.
If you want something cheap to insure then you want a Falcon, Commodore, Camry or Magna.

Funny how here in ****ty Aust. the insurance companies disgrace themselves with such hefty prices and provide absolutely nothing except for security while other countries and their insurance companies actually put towards young people and learning to be safe, In Japan the insurance companies pay for dangerous driving courses for "ALL" learner drivers,......instead our country just throw useless excuses and hope it all disappears.....end rant...lol...

on top of that they crank up the fines to astronomical proportions, and strategically target in specific areas which pose very little danger and then claim that its not revenue raising.

More then just a lancer
a PAIN IN THE ARSE. insurance companys now know the pain of them. Did you know for a repair sake a nissan R33 is better. IMO if your into cars car just go 3rd party. Because you will be better off repairing it yourself. As the insurance companys will at best try to get NZ parts but in most cases use 2nd hand import parts anyway. the Gaurds are the biggest issue, because the repairs might be minor but without cheap bolt on panels - that means labour costs. Car's only going to be insured for what 10K - not worth any premium over $1000. 3 young male drivers, I garrentee one of you will hit it. They ain't bad cars just nothing spectacular. The non MIVEC is a KF and the Mivec version does make it go better but still slugs, for all them KW's you put 4 people into a GPX and well - just watch Dunydoors blow it away with a full load and painters equipment and ladder on the roof |

Ok we have decided to keep it. Yeah I wasn't thinking when I wrote MiTec or whateva I wrote, you all got the gist tho.
If we knew what we know now we wouldn't have bought it. IMPULSE SALE!! At the end of the day my brothers will be able to learn into it, and dad has said that he will buy a new car for my brothers if insurance is still too expensive when they get their P Plates, which is like 2 years away. Shame, it is a nice car, and I won't be able to drive it. Suppose I'll just have to put up with the Astina, at least the police don't even look at me. Thank you stockness. |

did Just Cars Insurance offer an excess adjustment? adjust the excess to a higher amount to lower the premium. can save quite a bit, just make sure not to crash it
