Whats the best fuel pump

Whats the best fuel pump for a bj 1.8L and are the injectors different to the sp20?

the stock one really works fine and has been proven to be fine up to 180kw (and some more)
the fuel pump is actually from the MPV, a pump designed for a 3.0l V6 engine which has much higher fuel demands... and since this is an OEM application, it is designed for extra capacity for reliability reasons

the only people who do install an "uprated" fuel pump are the mazdaspeed owners in the states who don't trust the stock fuel pump and are ignorant of the fact that it's designed for a much bigger engine... the most popular pumps are the walbro pumps, but it is not an exact fit and requires certain creativity


as for the injectors, yes they are different from the SP20... if you look on the engine info page on my site, you will see the rated specs

Kool stick to the stock fuel pump. As for the injectors would the sp20 's be a direct fit?

yes, but without any engine management systems, your engine will run too rich, if at all

is the fuel pump used in 1.8 same as one used in sp20, do you know if this is the same pump used in the US fs-det? also do u know the flow characteristics of the one from say an 02 sp20

AFAIK yes same for FP/FS.

No idea. I'd use a different pump to stock anyways, something with a bit more head room. Deatschwerks 65c personally is what I'd run, e85 compatable etc.

Universal kit fits our cars AFAIK, comes with new filters etc.

the pump is a going to be a standard unit. Been done for years. Even the rotarys had the same pump for many years as a 626 and it's the same for Supra. Surprise it was made by DENSO. even the Mazda's with units mazda by Mitsubishi ? wow same as a Galant VR4.

but Cond on Andy - you must of done some pumps in your time - EL - EF falcons - Holdens ? Replace the filter but **** your there now - - well if you have access like some cars through the seat - replace the pick up filter. if not you have to drop tank - have 4WS in the way 4WD etc etc. then you either do it now or latter.

If your thinking long term - any of the walbro mild upgrades more then enough. same goes for the Denos' and Bosch units but try and get a german made bosch or Euro made not Eastern block Euro butt.

Depending you will find with injectors etc etc you might get fuel surge when you drop below 1/3 with bigger injectors. IF you do fit surge tank and nice big external.
Reason I still run stock. No need and well I run the wagon above 1/3 and it's only on roundabouts the fuel pump goes feed 330 cc injectors ? where are the 170injectors gone.

have you ever taken apart a fuel pump assembly from a BJ?
it's no "standard unit"... it is a little different and different enough that a generic fuel pump will not attach to the assembly properly

What's a generic fuel pump?

Edwin - IF some comes to the shop BJ BJ2 what ever MPV etc. I don't wait.
I get on the blower and I go give me a Fuel pump for Said model car.

If I need performance part - I ring the performance shop.

Send me out the part Bang fit - PAY bye bye ?

What's it being different got to do with the price of Fish?

so your answer is no then, because you can't even attest to the fact that no aftermarket non-BJ specific fuel pump fits?

since it sounds like you never taken the fuel pump out of a BJ, let me help you:

because it is secured to the assembly using a plastic clip, the proper length and shape of the fuel pump itself is necessary... anything generic that is not made specific to the BJ will require rework of the assembly by creative means or simply won't work at all

actually Dude I have done one but it was a GF or GW.

As I said I'd just order the right bit and part.
If it requires as noted by one person- Universal adaptor well I just charge $400 labour

I don't get why you get your knickers in a knot over it.
The person who asked originally has done more pumps I bet then you have done burnouts. So I don't think it's going to be a big issue for him

section 1.1 of Mazda tech training manual: How to say "you need to replace the whole assembly" with a very slight smirk.
That fuel pump setup is a joke in a "sir we can assure you it is a horse" kind of way. "Don't mind the hump or tendency to spit or the fact it may look like a camel".

I'd strip the entire lot and make an internal surge tank, custom pump filter setup and do away with those plastic bl##dy connectors.

I don't discriminate but a bit of fun on the back seat with the wrong type could lead to some very hot action.
