Fitting an LSD diff?
The arrival of my LSD diff is nearing and it's time to think about fitting it. I drive a Lantis Type-R and the diff is from a Lantis Type-R (Mine didn't come with LSD) so I'm hoping it's a fairly straight forward job for a mechanic to do to fit it? I assume it's a case of opening the gearbox swapping the parts et viola? I guess my questions are how long will it take a half decent machanic to do? How hard a job is it? And do I need any other parts on top of the LSD diff itself?
Any advice on this is greatly appreciated. Cheers! Simon.

Here you go - http://www.imazda.com/forums/showthread.php?t=2701
Ideally you'll want to replace the bearings.

might want to drop some new syncro's in as well cheap and if your opening it up worth the extra cost in long term.

I just recently did this and that thread Rupe linked is what I used... I had never opened a tranny before and I have basic mechanic skills and I was able to do it myself.
I didn't replace any synchros or gear parts, I just took everything apart to replace the LSD. The most difficult part was removing the gear from the stock diff (there are 10 heat welded rivets that have to be removed). I have a 12 ton press so pressing the bearings on wasn't an issue either...

I think the MSP LSD was originally the equivalent of a 1.5, but then it was updated a few generations ago.

Thanks for the guide, Dan. You've linked me to that before and I've read it several times. However I still don't have the confidence, the tools, the time or the patience to takle this myself. I guess I'll have to speak to some mechanics around my area and see what they say. My guess is that they won't even know what I'm talking about! I could take it to Mazda who should theoretically know but charge muchness for that reason. It'd be a no brainer I guess if I was convinced that they knew what they were doing. No one paid a mechanic to do it? I'm just after a rough idea of how much labour it's reasonable for them to charge me for.

any gearbox/diff place can do it. and will understand you alot more than most mechanics.
as for giving you a prices. aust vs uk would be very different. i got a lsd fitted 3 years back, was $280. was originally quote $500, but they said it was an easy swap. and they supplied bolts also, as the ones that came with the lsd were not long enough to go all the way through the crown wheel. |
