woah i completly missed this thread up until this morning
 how on earth did you get 4" of water in the jack well??? oh man thats scary from reading everything up to now mats last remark is making most sense, most likely the hit managed to move the hub relative to the strut.. i hope you get it all fixed buddy  i know how annoying a unknown sound can be in a car.. it can drive a person mental
