hey there

guess what, mazda have found the VICS problem in my 99 1.8L! so my tap tap noise is not the valvetrain, its loose VICS screws. Apparently i havent lost any yet but they are on the way. My dealer submitted a technical report to Mazda about the prob because they have never heard it afflicting a 1.8 before and i am waiting to hear back as to what they will do about it.

So basically, if u have weird rattle noises from the manifold/injector area in any 1.8 or 2.0L BJ Astina, get it checked out! year model/manufacture date doesnt seem to count anymore

It's been along time since I've been here. But thought I would add that this happened to my car quite sometime ago. 2 years ago perhaps?

Was coming home in the rain and there was no one around so used the abs to stop outside my house (gotta test it!). After I came to a complete stop there was a loud ticking sound from the engine. Idled it up the drive and in the end got it towed to mazda. After a couple of months of waiting etc, eventually they ended up replacing the engine.

Just thought I would let you guys know because someone earlier thought they remembered this. It certainly can do some damage! At that point in time I had done about 27000, now I've done about 75000, no probs now!

Hrmm, after enjoying the surge of power i get when VICS kicks in at 5500rpm, it got me thinking if there was an easy way of adjusting it, to kick at 4500rpm…

VICS is about using the best length intake runner for a given engine speed.
Mazda has tuned the VICS to activate in the best place, moving this piont would have negative effects.

I gathered it was about being the most efficient (in terms of fuel usage) at any given engine speed? Moving it lower would decrease economy but perk up engine response... Maybe not?

I found a thread somewhere saying you could buy some thing (MSD?) that could be used to alter the point at which VICS engages. So people seem to get some benefit from altering it.

Besides, If mazda tuned all their engines to the best possible output from factory, then why does everyone modify them :P

When you mod your engine and upgrade the cams and such, VICS is no longer in it's optimum position. Mine comes on about 500rpm too late now. I don't know how you mod it with stock ECU in mind so it's pumping the right amount of fuel, but with aftermarket ECU you've a few choices.

You can change it by using either the frequency kit or the shift light kit from Jaycar. I would think that the stock ECU would be able to keep the fuel right automatically. I've built the kit to do this after experiementing with the bum dyno and I'm fairly sure mine is around 400 rpm away from the perfect trigger point. The only way to tell accurately is to do 2 dyno runs, 1 wth the VICS solenoid permanently on and one without it. This way the torque curves can be compared to find where it should change to give the most benefit.

If you know someone with a G meter (Gtech or such), that's the easiest way to find the crossover point for activation. Debates on how accurate G meters are won't matter, as the point you are trying to find is relative to each G'd dyno run anyhow...

Do you understand what VICS is?
VICS is not VTEC.

Rod, he's got an FS-ZE, it's possible it does have a more pronounced VICS effect compared to AUDM tuned cars? Those engines have bigger TB, IM and higher compression, so it's possible the VICS is more noticeable (or laggy down low?). Mine used to come alive at 5500rpm whereas if I had no VICS it would just fall off and go south. I wouldn't call it anything like a kick of power, a hickup at best, but VICS is our friend.

When I was looking to re-power the 929 I almost bought a 13B RE Super Injection.
It had DEI (Dynamic Effect Inlet) and 6PI (Six Port Induction). DEI is early VICS and 6PI is early variable valve timing (all in a rotary). I did a lot of reading on both topics.
Take a look athe thread that shows SP20 factory cast iron headers, Mazda engineers can be serious about bringing out the power of there vehicles but are hamstrung by all the different regulations outside of Japan.

Well the dreaded vics has grabbed another victim... me . I got off the highway from visiting Tash's parents up at toowoomba this evening and noticed the rough idle at 55km/h, so i thought i'd test it and slow down and see if anything would happen, after that it doesnt idle properly and sounds like I have done a piston and maybe a valve. What Pisses me off the most is that there was no prior warning of this happening, so the car will be going in to get fixed hopefully monday. OH and my car was build date april 02', so yeah it can happen to all the SP20's...

One sad & depressed Marc...

Make Mazda pay for it, the know it's a problem but choose to do nothing about it so they don't ruin their zero recall fault BS...

This problem goes past warranty into DUTY OF CARE to their customers as far as I'm concerned...

theres truth in that, however whether mazda will care and do something about it is another thing.

He could fight it, but it will likely end up costing him more than a rebuild will

UPDATE:

We left the car at my parents place last night, the old boy called me up this morning to tell me that the no.4 spark plug was completely squashed! after hearing this, i quickly raced over there with another set just to see what would happen when we put some fresh plugs in. It sounds like whatever is swimming round is still embedded in the piston...

The parents mechanic is gonna speak with mazda at bundamba 2moro to see what grounds we have to stand on... Im still screwed anyways.

Would anyone have a clue how much it would be to actually fix?

Marc
