Exchanging timing belt Astina 2000 - what else?

Hi,

my Astina (1.8, manual, 2000) has almost done 170000kms. The timing belt was exchanged last at 90000km (by a mechanic).

A mate of mine is very good with cars (exchanged whole engines of Fords, etc), so I am thinking of doing a major service with his help.

I am thinking about exchanging the timing belt.
(or is it too early? I might leave the country in less than a years time and will have to sell the car anyway. Do not drive much, maybe 10000 per year).

My question is what else should I exchange ?
I thought of the gearbox oil...what else? Water pump? Other belts?

Where should I buy the parts? Ebay? Or does someone here want the business instead?

Does a timing belt failure do damage to this particular engine? If so I could take the risk....

Thanks a lot for your advice! Much appreciated!

Ok well for a start no need to do the timing belt yet they are normally changed at 100,000 km intervals and when you do change it do the water pump while you are there. saves time and will eventually save money make sure you get a the GBH water pump they are made in Japan

if you are planning on selling it within 12 months. then it is a waste of your money to replace it.

thanks!

Thanks guys,

with this type of engine, does a timing belt failure do any damage?
If they are supposed to last for 100k kms that's fine anyway...I heard the 80000km mark somewhere...

Reading on the forums a bit I found out about gearbox oil change...never heard of that before, guess it was done at the 90000 service (that was before I bought the car).

Am I correct that it is very similar to a normal oil change? I change the oil myself, therefore thinking that the gearbox should be within my capabilities...following the instructions here on the forum......or is there any trick to it?
Ahh, its a manual...not even sure if they make that car as an automatic?!

Thanks!

From what i've read these are non-interference engines so a timing belt failure isn't catastrophic. but i'm sure that any engine part failure at speed is never ever good.

someone else could confirm this for him?
