Slipping Clutch
Hi guys,
Wouldn't you know it, have the engine running well now (apart from going through a bit of oil). And now the clutch is going. Lots of free play in the pedal and it's started slipping on acceleration/uphill etc. Have been quoted approximately $800 to replace the clutch. Couple of questions. Is this a decent price? Saw some older posts where people have had them done cheaper, but they were older posts. Secondly, is it worth it? Rego is due this month. My BA is old enough to vote, and it has done 250,000k's. How much life have people gotten out of theirs? Should I let the old girl rest and look for a cheap car with less kms? Seem to be having problem after problem lately, and think I'll have to do something with suspension and possibly exhaust soon also.

if there is free play in the pedal. i'd investigate that first. maybe there is engaugement issues, and it isn't the clutch itself.
as for spending money on it. that is up to you what direction you go with it. but if you know in the next 12 months you need to pour another 800 into the suspension and more money inyo the exhaust. then you probably have gone past the cars value. if you are gonna spend up to $2K in the next 12 months. then you better kepp it for a while. or put that $2K towards a new car. |

You mentioned free play in your openning post. No good asking me about the free play.
If you are gonna do it yourself, you need 4 hard to make the job easier. |

The Mazda engine is supported by the transmission so you have to use a temporary engine support before you remove the engine mounts from the trans and then yeah it's that easy. It's dirty heavy work especially when you're trying to juggle a trans onto the clutch.

Oh yeah, you should remove the flywheel and take it down to the brake shop for machining.

Thanks for the advice guys. Decided it would be too painful to try and do on my own, so I left it to the experts this time around.
Ended up being $650 for install, machining of the flywheel and some small parts (rear main seal, clutch pilot bearing, fluids) which hurts but the car is going again. Also the clutch kit set me back ~$130 Hopefully it'll last another 250000kms
