My new Hardtop boot install

Been making a new sub box to regain some usable space in my boot again.for the last couple of weekends.

This is the end result. One piece boot carpet looks the goods which is held in place by the velcro (so it's easily removable). Pretty happy with the result!

Box is made from 16mm MDF and fibreglass, molded to the contours of the area behind the wheel well. I HATE fibreglassing. I can post pics of the building of the box if anyone's interested.

Sub is a 12" Pioneer TS-W306DVC dual voice coil thingy, powered by a hidden Alpine MRP-M450 monoblock amp. The shiny chrome PPI thing powers the 5 speakers in the cabin. The chrome bars over the sub are for a little protection for when i've got fully sik jdm yo bits sliding around in the boot.

One of the few projects i've started lately that i've actually finished haha

Its hard not to appreciate the amount of effort that must go into getting an install looking as clean as that!

Question? What does one do when they get a flat tyre? Or do you cary one of those goo/pressurised canisters for an on the go repair?

Cheers guys.

As the carpet is just velcroed in place, i just pull the carpet off the amp side, roll it back a bit, lift up the factory plastic boot floor, and pull out the spare. Still pretty easy. Just means i need to spend 5 minutes tucking/sticking the carpet back in place once the spare is back in.

ok, dev pics.

Sub box: MDf and fibreglass, and the boot all masked up to have the fibreglass laid down

Out of the boot, one layer of glass down (mostly!)

More glass inside (now about 12mm thick), and some 'toolbox' (liquid nails stuff) over the joins just for a bit of extra sealing/rigidity

Velcro on the box to hold the carpet firmly in place.

Amp side of things. I'd just like to point out that the VW is that high because it's up on jacks due to a flat tyre!

and after that, strategic use of velcro in various spots on the walls of the boot to hold the carpet in place.

Sound is pretty good. light years ahead of the old 10".

The carpet came from Clark Rubber. 1830mm wide - which was almost enough to go from one side of the boot to the other and up the sides in one piece.

I bet they're handles from a hardware store. Like the type you'd use on a kitchen/bathroom drawer or cupboard.

It looks far too practical Dan. You're getting old !

haha yeah they're kitchen drawer handle from Bunnings! Had to be a bit creative to get them to attach as they're designed to attach from the back, which kinda makes it hard when the box is one piece and the sub has to be in place

I am old

But you're right...if i was 10 years younger there'd be neons and shiny bodycolor bits everywhere haha

Any one else wondering how many near misses Dan had closing his boot and then realising that he had something sitting in the way....ie take a look at the remote and then later the velcro box...and you'll get what I mean.
