Hi, I'm Alexander93

Hi, I've just recently bought myself a 1990 BG Astina, In hope to making it my new project.

Any suggestions on what engines would see fit to be dropped in?

Bpt from familia. Check derb's profile. Budget a few grand and upgrade the brakes and suspension first. Loads of info here and welcome!

Any suggestions on the types of brakes and suspension i should be upgrading too?
I usually upgrade those after finding out what engine and HP it is that they have to handle.

suspension: kings/lovells springs with kyb shocks, or BC Racing coilovers from JustJap.

brakes: slotted brake rotors on the front and Remsa street/track pads all round from GSL Rallysport.

Also, if your car comes with the SOHC motor, you can get the front brakes off the DOHC model that are a little bigger and bolt straight up. And do maintenance while parts are off the car. for instance, if you're doing the brake upgrade, replace the wheel bearings while the hubs are off the car, etc. if you need to remove stuff, see if there is better stuff to put back on or at least maintain the area you are working on.

Too much work to be worth the hassle.
The engine faces the other way and would be a nightmare to fit.
The latest engine that you possibly would be able to get to fit would be a 2003 FS-ZE but too much work as well.

As above, way too much money to spend on something that can be achieved with a BPT turbo engine. If you want to stay N/A then I think you could make an FE3 engine fit.

My car was SOHC originally, but now holds a BPT and looks like it's from the factory.

BPT is basically the Turbo'd version of the BP found in the BG SP, originally from the BG Famila GTX.

It was also found in the Australian new Ford Laser TX3i 4WD from 89-93

Engine mounts are EXACTLY the same, as is mating to your existing gearbox. As long as you get the full engine loom, it's easy as pie. I've already gone through a loom with Cookie against my car and we marked what all the plugs do, so i'm more than happy to assist if you get the gear.

As for price, no idea at all actually. I found this from a quick google, but it says call for the price. http://www.allautos.com.au/tabid/59/...1/Default.aspx

Expect no change from $2k if replacing the externals. It's almost cheaper to buy a wrecked laser with the swap already done.

I'd replace:all mounts, water pump, timing belt and seals at a minimum. A running engine without any electronics are about $500-750. Loom about $100. Intercooler about $100-300. Add piping ontop of that. Ecu's are about $100... Adds up quick...trust me.
