Looking for info on Turboing a BJ SP20 Astina.
Hi all I'm looking for info on turboing the SP20 I know you get the Hi-Flow kit from streetdreams but what I want to know is the pros and cons what else would I need to change?
How do the standard block and gearbox handle the extra power are the standard brakes good enough with a descent set of brake pads and some good fluid, etc stuff like that. Any help would be appreciated....................... |

From what I have read the rods are the weakest point, any ideas what a set of rods are worth? how are the pistons with the extra presure.....
I'm looking at doing this in November, I'm just trying to find the in's and out's before I go through with it. |

pistons are fine, but lower compression ratio pistons are advised...
try looking at the www.msprotege.com for rod prices |

Hi guys,
Is it safe to assume this sweatdreams turbo kit works with the 1.8 FP aswell? They are claiming 210whp , or ussing TP's rule, 210kW at the flywheel. Hmmm, anyone hazard a guess at how this would shape up on the 1.8? Gav. |

Oh just another thought,
For arguements sake, let's pretend the 1.8 with the turbo produces 180whp. How well would an auto cope with that stress? |

When i spoke to jaun from street dreams about turboing my car he told me that the kit worked on the 1.8 however they tend to use a smaller turbo that spools faster.
The 1.8 liter engine creates the power later on in the rev range and it is has a little less torque, juan also added that the 1.8 can quite comfortably handle 200whp and that the rods in the 1.8 are less likley to break in the 2.0 After speaking to Wiredone (from street dreams) he told me that the 2 litre can safley handle 8psi on stock internals which means the 1.8 may be able to handle the same levels or slighlty higher levels of psi. |

yeah it'll work on the 1.8 - probably a tiny bit down on power, but since the 1.8 revs higher, i wouldnt be suprised if it makes the same power as the 2.0
the rods are definately less likely to break compaired to the 2.0, but still i'd definately replace them. and yep, the 1.8 can handle 8psi semi-ok because it has 9.1:1 compression ratio (just like the yank 2.0) i'd still strongly suggest getting atleast forged rods if you plan on going turbo. pistons and crank are ok and can handle heaps of power, but the rods will go in no time. and like most things if you can up the boost to get more power, eventually you'll try it and will kill the rods. and auto - i think the yanks are keeping boost lower, but i'm not 100% sure. probably 6psi limit. but just get a hi-stall torque converter and you'll be able to get on boost before you take off |

1.8 gives 200whp@8psi!!!
Wow, something to consider when the warranty runs out at the end of next year even at 6/7psi. I'd assume this sort of pro turbo kit is much more niggle free than an engine swap (even if it is 2X the price). I have to admit I am scared of the Mazda autos+high power, it's no secret they don't like high revs. But then again the RX8 has ~30Nm more torque in the auto version. So is it revs or big kW they don't like? And TP, WTF is that between the ferrets legs! |

revs and kw dont kill engine parts, torque does.
and the badger - it's tail |

Like you i thought abouth the engine conversion and what i basically found out is that we have a much newer engine and although it cant handle the same psi levels it still can make a pheomonal power gain levels and can out run the older bpt (the engine im assuming you are reffering to)
Also if you were do the kit you are looking at 8 or 9 grand but if you have a custom job done it can be much cheaper when i looked at turboing my car a local respected tuner quoted me $6500 drive away with the full exhaust thats a mere $1000 more that what i was quoted to get a BPT (the gtr motor not the gtx) and have it fitted and set up with a full 3 inch turbo back system. I can see the value in that extra $1000 as you are retaining a much newer engine that can potentially create alot of power even at 6 or 7 psi at a later date you could look at a set of forged pistons and stronger rods once you do that you could safely run much higher boost levels (recently in america the high boost car cut a 12.5 1/4 mile time i am not sure what sort of time the street dreams car is running but i am thinking that it too would be a very fast car). Goodluck mate what ever you are planning to do, i am personally running down the NA path!!!!!!

yeah just some additional tuning and you'd be right as rain (damn identical engine thingio)
on the auto issue most of the americans are also running tranny coolers as they eat them boxes up like a porn star

I feel I've hijacked craz0's thread, But you guys are putting up great suggestions/comments for all to enjoy in anycase.
ahb11m: I wouldn't be racing my car, so I don't think the oil cooler for the auto would be necessary. Having said that, I am concerned about the amount of power it can tolerate (or rather not) on a quick little fang up a mountain for instance... The sweatdreams kit may have everything included except for conrods, but the price does seem exhorbedant. Since I'm no turbo officienado, could someone explain where all the cost goes for them to say the kit costs $9500 (2.0L) + $1000 install? http://www.streetdreams.com.au/works...ocess=turbokit A quick uneducated breakdown of the cost in my mind doesn't seem that brutal, and perhaps a bit closer to what craz0 was suggesting around the $6000 mark. It's a long ways off at any stage, still got 13 months left on the warranty. And in the meantime I'm concentrating on handling and aesthetics first. So by then I might've come across an easy manual trans swap? Solve all my probs...

yes still invest in an auto oil cooler. better to avoid problems esp since that is a known issue.
also dont ignore the importance of an engine oil cooler on a turbo app |

Do you still need an oil cooler even if you have a decent intercooler? Do stock turbo engine's like on 200sx and WRX have them?
I'm still figuring out everything that i need for my conversion, but the shopping list is getting there.

No relationship between the intercooler and oil cooler. Oil both gearbox and engine
breaks down with heat. Hotter you run and the longer you run the less the oil works and the more damage done to the parts they are supposed to be protecting. An oil cooler can only help with this everybody knows its a good thing it comes down to cost. Does a WRX or 200sx have them I dont think so. But thats more that those cars are built to a $$$ not to a quality mark. Evo Lancers all have them same as most of the genuine rally cars including WRX's. If you want to put all your faith on just changing oil your call. Lastly changing to a manual wont fix all your worries. The later models run a G-Series box same as all the other turbo 323's and it is without doubt the biggest hurdle/problem faced. If I had known I would be spending $5k on gearboxes in 5 years I may have done a bit more thinking about my conversion. Regards Mal
