atsp, assuming you'll stay NA (for a while at least) these would be your 'standard' mods assuming you don't want to start spending big $. 1. Intake - panel and CAI. get some nice col air flowing in there 2. Run 98ron fuel and advance the timing 3. Exhaust - extractors -> high-flow cat (commodore ones are fine for our cars, they flow more than enough and they are cheap from wreckers) -> straight-through. wouldn't go any bigger than 2.25", aim for mandrel bends and stainless steel. mild steel is heavier and rusts so you'll need to have it rust proofed. no cannons, theres enough crappy exhausts going around already 4. port and polish - basic polish is easy to DIY. porting is harder and would suggest you leave it to the professionals. 5. stronger bearings and valve springs - it'll let you rev higher, which is good cause intake + exhaust mods will probably move you're power band up a bit. FIY BP motor in decent condition will survive 8k rpm, 9k spun my bearings Now it gets more expensive: 6. Aftermarket ECU - really need it to make the most of the mods. without one you'll be stuck with what you got from 1-5 (which would be perhaps 10kw?). ECU will open up a lot more possibilities and power eg. d4v0r 7. Cams - really need an ecu to make the most of anything more than a very mild reground. 8. High comp pistons - starts to get $$$ from here. Should probably have put lightened flywheel in there somewhere too. And a HD clutch to boot. faster shifts and easier to rev. Stiffer suspension will help with weight transfer on accel, stickier wheels etc. Oh, best bang for buck? shed weight. spare wheel, tool kit, subs etc. its free and will do more than 1-5 above

2. should be done after 3. 3. next step, to be done before 2. new commo cat costs $75. 4. port and polish = $500. 5. all useless as power dissapears after 6000rpm. 6. $2000 minimum. 7. best bank for your buck mod, but as dave said, only mild profiles without aftermarket ecu. 8. can be done without aftermarket ecu. do number 2 to allow pistons. suspension advice = good. weight sheding = cheap and good. |

which model comodore cats are a good fit for BA? cus at 70 i will get one next week lol
midas wanted to charge me 600 for a hiflow cat... they can be such a ripoff sometimes |

most are typical
but I think they are meanign the Buick motor version basicly the VN to VR model Cat. my memory and palying holdens works my head right the VS was changed slighlty with the Ecotec and does not flow as well. it was same for V6 to V8. Some also call it the AC delco cat. |

On the stock engine.
Improve the engines flow, get cams to suit etc, and theres no reason why it wont build power well past 6000rpm. You'll likely lose a lot below 6000rpm by allowing it to breathe above it though....such is life with NA... Upgraded bearings and valve springs only adds a margin of safety when increasing the rev limit (assuming the engine is mechanically capable of doing it without insane piston speeds and piston acceleration) - but you're right if what you're saying is "on their own, they are useless". |
