Back pressure when refueling

Hi all

I just wanted to know if any if you experience the same problem I get when refueling.

At selected petrol pumps I pull the trigger as normal, fill up about 2 litres, then the whole bowser pump shudders. I then start again and the pipe will shudder again after a few more litres. This can happen upto 4/5 times during the one refuelling. At first I thought it was just the bowser, but its happened on at least 4 different pumps, then i thought it was just the way I was pulling the trigger, but I get no problems when I fill my falcon at those same pumps.

Then just last week I noticed another BA astina hatchback where the chick had the same problem I had. However she was only getting in a few 100ml before each shudder.

Any ideas on why this is happening???

Im thinking its to do with the shape of the metal pipe, ie the bend in it.

Ive tried holding the bowser rubber pipe in in different directions, but its still a mystery to me..

I had to take the nozzle out about 10mm on the hardtop. On the 929 it's about 10 degrees from straight.

Play with it. You'll get it right

Its not your car its the fuel vs the size/shape of the collector. As Cosmo said try pulling it out about 10mm and then push the handle down to give an angle where the exess air can escape and you should be fine. If you cause any type of vaccuum shut off when refuelling the pressure will act the same way the fuel does when tank is full and tell the gun that youve reached your fill point

ahhhh

i thought it might be that the pipe from cap -> tank is angled awkwardly.

thanks for your responses guys

it looks like all of you have used the tricks i have..

from now on, ill do a 4/5 trigger pull, slightly out with a bit of an angle for the nozzle...hopefully now the air will come out smoothly.

its weird how nearly everyone with a BA has the same problem.

common to mazda i'm thinking... my BJ has it... as ya said pull it out a notch and lean down on the gun... pull the trigger all the way... some are more sketchy than others, so doing this means 4/5 trigger is only necessary some of the time

yeh i had that problem at the start too... how i over came it was stick the nozzle all the way in... til the handle down a bit so the tip of the nozzle is slightly raised, and then pull the trigger all the way and there shouldn't be a problem.

yeah I get it with the BG the 2 KJ's and the BJ

must be a Mazda thing

I usually turn the nozzle a few degrees or pull it back out a bit

its because the air is having trouble escaping

yeah i get it too - all the time! - in my kn laser (aka astina). it clicks off within seconds of me refueling and i'm like "my tank is empty u nong!". so yeah, i agree with the guys above. u have to pull the nozzle out slightly ie. don't push it all the way in. but when the tank is PROPERLY full it will then click off, so don't worry about it overspilling.

yeah thats normal about the fuel tank

sounds like the tension on your timing belt is too tight.
