stainless is ever so slightly lighter. that's about it. no difference in performance otherwise.

I would have said none....didn't even think of weight.

Cost is a major factor when considering what system to put on.

i'm thinking of just going mild steel as i'm not too worried about weight and the fact that they are alot cheaper

what i want to know is why there are so few systems made from aluminium. it's 1/3rd the weight of steel.

it is fairly pricey, heats up alot quicker but also cools alot quicker than steel or stainless..

Stainless steel lasts a lot longer than mild steel will, especially on high heat applications. For the exhausts, a stainless system often sound better than mild steel, dont know why though, it just does.

Aluminium will blow nice bubbles of moulten alloy in high temps too! So you won't see any aluminium exhausts, it's just too reactive. But if you have the money, there is always titanium!!!

Mild steel is quieter and doesn't "ring" like stainless does. Well not until it rusts...

stainless won`t rust, so the pipe won`t get thinner or weaker over a long period of time.
i`ve just completed a full s/s system on mine, and to be honest the price difference wasn`t that great.

i`m up for correction here, but i also think that the stainless tube walls are slightly thicker than mild steel tubing.
really depends on how much you want to save, and how long you want it to last.

I have had a 3 inch mild steel exhaust now for 6 years. Muffler has just packed
it in but the exhaust is fine. Tapped the whole way along no note changes to
indicate wearing through. I do drive 30km to work each way its the short trips
that are bad to exhausts so maybe I am just lucky but not complaining.

Completely irrelevant to cost but I LOVE the sound from a SS exhaust
You will find a greater diff in high/low price with stainless as compared to mild steel as "some" people will make you pay to be different
I am considering a SS exhaust for the Batmobile and am wondering if anyone knows if it would be a better/cheaper option to purchase the bends and pipes seperately and have them welded up to make a nice custom job. As I have not been successful finding an off shelf kit for the car and I have had no luck when asking around to find out if the mx6 exhaust (which can be bought off shelf) will fit or require minimal modification to fit

Mild steel is cheaper but will rust (heat will disperse moisture and prevent rusting) but is more malleable than stainless. Stainless looks and sounds better but can tear with the stress and strain of engine movement.

if u want stainless tubing i can get it, and have it welded, my gf's dad own a stainless for boats business, for the exhaust you will need 304 stainless, and i think for tubesales u will need to be a business to buy from them, bends come in all diff angles and diameters. if u want them i can get some prices threw the week, prolly can get them cheaper than if u walk in there...

on the thought the expencive thing with stainless exhausts is the bits of thick metal that where the pipe joins the cat and stuff like that, the triangle things where the gasket go, there fairly expencive to get made out of stainless...

I will jack up the car this weekend and get a 'rough' idea of what I will need but I wont have the complet picture until about 6 weeks time after Microtech GB and then I can getthe cat and muffler from Magnaflow and then I will be able to work out just how I want the damn thing to fit
But this seems to be the most cost effective way to build the thing I think and I can atleast modify the way I want the box to exit the car (me is thnking of two round Canon style at about 45 degrees with one sitting back a bit to expose the other (I saw something similar on an MR2 and I though it looked pretty sweet)
But I will definately be doing a bit of measuring this weekend Tim
I will also give you an indication of what flanges I will need
Cheers guys for your help
