Help! Engine noises - Popping noise within the K&N Filter and Rattlimg noise

Is anybody out thier that can help me? I currently own a 1997 323 Astina (4 cylinder) has 93000K on the odometer and having two strange engine noises.
1) Popping noise coming from the K&N filter. This happens usually when i am parking (turning the wheel when the motor is on iddle - pops about 6 times then it dissapears), it also happens when i am turning in corners slowly (pops once or twice). This noise is now happening more often (it rarely happened before - i guess the problem is getting worse). I have spoken to a couple of mechanics regarding this issue (they have never come across this problem before), was unable to help me.
2) Rattling (tapping) noise within the the engine bay. The rattling happens when I am giving the car a bit of a go between 4000rpm to 5000rpm (the car feels normal and not loosing any power) then the noise suddenly disappears.
Has anybody come across this problems with their astina before? I love my astina and just want the problem fixed.
Thanks. ZedBoy

the noise could be ur tappets....how long since had an oil change? and poping from ur filter? i highly dought it, if the problem is occuring when ur turning i would say check ur CV joints mine does that same thing kinda of like a click rather than a pop

I purchased the car when it only had 63000k on the odometer and change the oil & filter every 5000k. My CV Joints are fine (had them checked out) the noise is definitely coming from the pod filter (checked while the bonnet is open).

just a stab, could it be the air flow meter not the actual filter?

1) You have some harmless resonance in the intake plumbing. The standard intake has counter measures so that you don't hear it. It is nothing
2) If the engine sounds like a can of spray paint being shaken then have the timing checked. In the interum use 96 octane fuel.

Oh yeah, the number 2 question could also be a buildup of carbon on the pistons. Drop into your local Subaru spare parts dept. and pick up a can of 'upper engine cleaner' follow the instructions and enjoy the sore finger
