Clutch or Gearbox problem. Common replaceable parts.

Hi All,

Im new to Mazda's. I am myself a Nissan 300zx Z32 driver whom helped a friend purchase a 1995 or 1996 Astina 323 BA Manual Hatchback.

It was purchased from a used caryard and is under warrenty now its experiencing the following issues

- Poor acceleration
- Gear Crunching
- Burning Smell after run
- Rough idling / Engine Stalls if stationary with aircon on

Being not familiar with this car, I would guess the clutch probably needs replacement but after searching on this forum it seems gearbox failure is probably common with this model of car? Not sure if Im correct on that one, would appreciate someones opinion.

Anyways if its either clutch or gearbox its covered under warrenty, but was just wondering proactively what other common failure components should be replaced while work is done on either clutch/transmission.

ie. Rear Main Seal would one of the major items.. Maybe replace clutch fork ?

Not really sure what other components would be wise to replace.

Appreciate peoples suggestions! Thanks in advance!

Also anyone recommend a good helpful mechanic up North of Melbourne direction. (Reservoir and surronding areas?)

Idling problems are likely due to the IAC (Idle Air Control) valve sticking. It's the bit at the bottom of the trottle body with the 1" pipe feeding it. Use some WD40 or carby cleaner on it and let it soak for a while.

Burning sounds like oil leaking from the valve cover. Replace it and the 'O' ring on the dizzy before cleaning down the engine.

I'd change the trans fluid before going to the effort of changing the clutch.

Its I4. I believe its fuel injected so would have thought it would have a ptu instead of dizzy.

I was thinking more of the burning smell inline with the acceleration problems, that is what made me think of the clutch. Car has already done 200k

I havent seen the car in person since its on the other side of town, so hard to say what exactly the issue is until can see it first hand.

Thanks for giving me some other ideas to work with.

Surprise Surprise, since my friend is on the other side of the city and I suspected a greater issue at play.. My friend decided to take car to mechanic authorised by warrenty given by car yard.. After 2 days with the car at the mechanic, final diagnosis comes to ignition leads and a bill of $400-something.

When my friend told me I was like what? charging $400+ for leads that would cost no more than $130 and take 10 minutes to install..

Trying to get my friend to talk mechanic down to $200 which I believe would be more inline.. still doesnt addressed other issues my friend raised...

Friend is a girl, maybe just trying to padd on the price for that reason..
