Who wants to have fun???

This is my engine. It has a broken timing belt cover (nicely left that way by bridgestone) how do I fix that? The timing belt is rubbing on a piece of metal. I have an oil leak. As you can clearly see! And last but not least, where the hell is the thermostat???

The car has been fine for 2 days since the episode of the apparent "air bubble" needing to be let out, it had a fit of shuddering, over heating, whinging and hardly any power. The 2 days after were normal, then my boyfriend rang me from Gympie Rd today where it started over heating. Please if any one can help, I'd really appreciate it, or just take it away and fix it!! (pay would be handed) I already know I could trust the guys on here cos you know what you're doing!

Could someone please put an arrow as to where the thermostat would!!!

easiest way to find the thermostat is follow the top radiator hose to the engine it goes into a cast aluminium housing and then thermostat is inside of it 2 bolts to undo the housing and 1 hose clamp on the radiator hose could just be the water pump has given up

It was only 3 weeks ago we got the water hose replaced. Is that different to the water pump?

Yep,
The water pump is behind the blue pully on the left end of the engine and the thermostat is on the right. If you ever think about replacing the thermostat spend the extra and get it from Mazda. You won't get the right one from parts shops and it'll be good bye engine.

yes the water pump is behind the timing belt i believe, should really be replaced when the timing belt is replaced to prevent having to do it all again if the water pump begins to fail befor the next timing belt interval.
you say you had the radiator hose replaced, gessing it spit? if so and the engine got hot it may have defected the thermostat and should be replaced. and you should probly get the engine head checked with a o2 tester as these engines don't like being over heated

Is it possible to replace the timing belt without stuffing around and taking the whole engine out? I'v been told by numerous people it has to be taken out, thats why it'd be so expensive! I dont know who to listen to?

After 20 years with Mazda yes it is possible to replace the pump without taking belt off but if your belt has not been changed do it at the same time as the covers are already off

I'm not trying to piss anyone off. I have had a lot of bad experiences with mechanics before and I dont wanna get ripped off again. I rather pay properly and have my car fixed then bring it home with the same problem that I just paid for...

You are gonna find that with you care being unique as it is. Not many mechanics have experience with Mazda 'K' series engines.

The reason why most will tell you that the engine needs to come out when the timing belt needs changing, is because of the proximity to the chassis. The chassis hides everything from view. So those few mechanics only feel comfortable to do the job with the engine out. But they will never tell you this. Nor is it them trying to rip you off.

My old roommate did his mechanic apprenticeship in the mid 90s. He even excalaimed at the fact that Mazda put such a big engine into a little space.

There is heaps of room in there to replace the water pump and timing belt in the car . K series motors are robust have seen the stop from getting to hot and melt the plug leads ( I fixed it started it and carried out a number of tests to see what the motor was like and it was fine )
If you want you can add it to my list and I will do it for you , but I live outside Ipswich .
