Painting bits and pieces

I've been painting bits and pieces in my engine bay and the time has come to paint the head cover but i want to keep the "DOHC 16-VALVE" & the "MAZDA" text unpainted so i can paint it a differant colour. on other projects ive used masking tape but i think it would be to touchy and give a crappy result. Any advise?

Something like this?

Best to polish the letters before you paint. It makes it easier to remove the paint the valve cover. Please remove it before you prep and paint, it makes for a much better job.

That looks really sweet! You should paint your heat shield, I did mine a while ago and it came up so good. How did you ploish the letters?

That does look good. I did the same thing on the GTiR Pulsar. Paint it and then machine the the paint off the letters/words. Looks phat.

I started with 1200 sand paper and finished with Autosol metal polish. It worked well on the BP as the letters are flat and even, On the FE it was a pain as the letters were all over the place.
I also had a Whiteline strut brace with the ends painted and the panel on the radiator top matching. Mr Payners photos and the grey Ballarat day also help

you have to disconect about two or three hoses, and then undo the bolts in the correct order, and replace them in the correct order to the correct torque!

he's talking about the valve cover (ie metal), not the plastic engine cover the sp20's have. the BG's are plasticless.
