re-ring

Is it pointless/futile to replace rings without honing the block first? I did this years ago on a 202 red engine with no issues but id like to prevent gremlins now if i can while everything is in bits. Worth replacing pistons too? Not after big power just sick of cleaning the black soot streak off the driveway after every start up.
P.S. Stems seals are being done.

honing at least, as for pistons depends on condition, piston to bore clearance and ring groove wear in piston but with new pistons engine life will be longer than just a de-lip hone and rings

Hone it. If lip present, then bore it.

If you can see the rifling easily then maybe not but if the bores are smooth then slap a hone through it. For the work you're doing though you should get the block cleaned and honed professionally just so you're happy that you did the job 100%.

The rifling is clearly evident, there is no scuffing perpendicular to the crank where pistons would exert the most friction.
It is a lowish k block and apart from replacing all seals/gaskets im wondering whether to just slap the refreshed head on it and charge away.
Once i pull it down im sure it would turn into a "may as well get forgies" kind of build and it will be off the road forever.
It would never pass a (nsw) pit inspection so ive got about 8 months to get it together!

I think ive just answered my own question.

If it's a P2 or P3 engine then rings are a must. Mazda had these engines built by Kia who used crap rings.

After much consideration, well mainly looking at my bank account, its headwork only for now,get throttle bodies working and let those trumpets sing like the horns of jericho!!!

Incidently if anyone is chasing a jenvey kit (or anything off their site) i can acquire them for less than retail price including duratec kits.
