GTR uses an IHI VJ23 and is a direct replacement for your VJ21. The GTR manifold does flow better then the GTX so is worth while if you can find one.
I'd ring round some engine importers and watch Rupewrechts' JDM page, they don't come up often.

VJ23 (GTR) and VJ20 (GTX) flanges/exhaust manifolds are different. they are not interchangable unless you swap turbos also.

What about dump pipe? I assume the turbo->dump pipe and dump pipe->exhaust is different as well?

Yes VJ23 uses different dump pipe to VJ20 actually the flange on VF23 exhaust housing is different to VJ20. Also if you install the VJ23 on GTX you will need to get GTR front engine mount as that mount has been specifically designed to clear the piping going to the turbo.
So not a simple bolt in upgrade.

What is a straight bolt on

So if the vj 23 isn't a straight bolt on what turbo is? I believe that a gtx has a VJ 20? what flange type is that? as im looking at a T28 and not sure if it will be a simple change without having to do manifold?

A replacement VJ20 is the only bolt on option, however you can use the VJ20 exhaust housing and mate it up with a VF10 or VF8 core and compressor housing. A T28 based turbo will not fit the GTX nor GTR manifolds.

I know this was an old post, but the mount in question on the GTR is the same as the GTX, the bracket that goes to the gearbox are different however!

T25 and T28 manifolds for BP engines are available off the shelf. just make sure the one you order will fit between the head and radiator.
