15 Inch VS 16 inch Rims

(Sorry this is in the wrong thread, didn't know I was still in lounge area)

Hey guys, after searching and thinking for a few days I have now hit a brick wall. Hoping you guys can shed some light.

I have a 1999 323 Protege Sedan (BJ)

I want to buy new rims, originally I was planning to go for some 15 X 6.5" rims as they are: decently priced; slightly wider; have a decent sized tyre wall; look good; etc.

However, now I am starting to think that since I am spending the money I might as well go a step further buy some 16 inch rims.

My main concern is that the 16's will scrub as I drive rather spiritedly through corners; however, since I will not be lowering the car at this stage I was thinking that it may not be a problem.

So what do you guys reckon? Should I stick with getting the 15's or just harden up and get some 16's ?

without lowering you can go 17's without sscrubbin im pretty sure.

i have lowered my on 16's and no scrub, it all really depends on the offset of the wheels rather than their size.

So if the offset is right and they tuck in nicelly, you can get 18's and lower it and be ok with scrubbing, but that does cause some comfort issues.

What is the ride quality like with the 16's?

I had 17's on my old Corolla and I swore never to get rims that large again, it bumped and scraped everywhere (but it was less than 10cm off the ground :P)

I think the offset for my car is +45 so i'll try and make sure I get rims with a close enough offset.

dont get 18s LOL
i didnt listen and now i ride a rough ride everyday, especially now that i've got stiffer suspension
but it does look nice though and thats the only pro for me

i dont think 15s and 16s will make any difference to ride quality

Haha, man I don't think my car would move with 18's under it :P Max I would go would be 16's.

i have 205/55/16 on the astina on lowered suspension and the ride is decent
they should be 205/50 but i didn't like that

the 55mm of tyre wall helps, and the extra height of the tire along with a 30 - 35mm drop = no scrubbing.

i also have a Prelude with 205/50/16 with stock suspension and the ride is a little cumffier but theres not much in it.

However the astina's handling is much better and i would pick that over a marginable comfort

This is something I've been wondering about for a while...

15x7 with 205/50 or 16x7 205/45. These sizes keep the gearing the same as present(14x6 195/60). I really enjoy giving it heaps on the smooth corners, but the roads here get pretty rough in some areas, especially in the wet season.

Anyone know if 15x7 +41 fits a BJ 1.8? A 16x7 +43 apparently does.

Also wondering about compatibility with possible future brake upgrades.

Sorry if it's a threadjack, but we have the same sort of question.

i'm running 17s with 205/30/17 N3000's which have a stiff ass sidewall. comfort is ok, can be rough sometimes (like a ripply gold coast highway

). i haven't lowered it yet but i'm expecting a pretty firm (read, christ its shaking the car to bits) ride

Decided to go for a set of 15X6.5 Inch rims in a +40 offset; as I feel it will be easier to throw the car into corners, if/when I lower it. Plus the rims that I wanted were only available in 16X7 and not 16X6.5

Going by what the offset calculator told me; I currently have 5.5 inch wheels with a +45 offset

If I change to 6.5 inch wheels with a +40 off set I get:

Inner Clearance: 8 mm LESS

Outer Position: EXTEND an extra 18mm

Would I be correct in assuming that at the current height the wheels should not scrub at all?

WHAT!!! your running a 205/30R17...im runnin 215/35R18

unless if the BAs came out with smalller rolling diameter but i dont think they did...

16x7 would be fine on a BJ.

And at stock height you should have no rubbing issues at all.
