noisey clutch pedal....
Heya guys i cant remember if ive mentioned this b4..
but my clutch pedal makes a evil noise.. (its a 1997 Astina hardtop too by da way =P ) its a clunk noise.. when i push pedal down its like it gets stuck and then clunks... its irritating the hell outta me and i dunno what to do... i had a look under the dash and inspected the pedal but there seems to but nuttin wrong.. i went around with a spanner and tightened any looses bolts.. they were all fine.. and also sprayed lots of INOX up there on any moveable parts... and still no go... I know its the pedal cause i had the car off and sitting there and stuck my head under and pressed pedal (yes it was uncomfortable as =P) and yeh its near the pivot point.. so if anyone has had this problem or knows how i can piss it off ill be happy to know =D

it sounds like when i broke/bent the clutch fork in my vw...but the astina one is fairly strong.
isn't your clutch on the way out?

Stick your head in the engine bay and have an assistant operate the clutch. Make sure the same noise isn't coming from there as well.

same thing happened to my bjII it is because the clutch is not adjusted properly. i had to have the throwout bearing and pressure plate replaced. (under warranty thank god)

My car has a clutch whistle/squeak when engaged, kindof like a very quiet high pitched fanbelt squeal. It also has a knocking sound when engaging first gear on rolling to a stop, and upshifting between first and second. cant feel anything thru pedal, just mufflied KNOCK, like something is shunting about in the gearbox, any ideas? Its been doing it for a long time now.

and mine was the tension spring on the pedal... not the box... hmmm you'd think i would have killed a clutch by now..... 190,000 and still going strong

braxta - could it be the prongs/springs on the clutch pressure plate?

ahb11m:
well it could be a belt i guess, but i thought it strange that the noise dissapears with the clutch pushed in...when i mentioned the belt slipping noise i was describing how it sounds, just like a quiet high pitched version of a slippping belt...but anyway, i think it can wait till the next service, not far away... Any ideas about my other prob? a shunting knock sound from the gearbox when shifting up and down between first and second when the vehicle is in motion? there is a slight delay between gear lever movement and the noise aswell btw, and u can't really feel it thru the lever its self. any ideas?? --->RedAstina |

dunno about the shunting... thats weird....
sounds very belt like to me... dads was doing it also keep in mind the BJ-I likes to eat alternator belts... there is an issue with the pulley on the alternator seizing

notchy clutch pedal
U normally have this problem with a lot of manual cars.
I think its all because the cluch disc (the wearing bit) gets thinner, when this occurs the fingers on the presure plate diaphram move outward, this in turn changes the leaverage angle where the clutch fork press's on the thrust bearing. (thats great hey but wtf) Ok since the angle of the fork has changed the leaverage force decreases and the fork pushes on the thrust bearing above its centre line in a different spot, now with years of operation small pits/notches form in the thrust bearing and now the fork isnt in them anymore when fully realesed, so it causes that notch u feel in the pedal as the forks goes in & out of the pits during its sweep. (yes its tranfered through the clutch/brake fluid) A new clutch is the only remedy The whisstle noise can be four things. 1/thrust bearing (noise occurs when cluch is applied, engine on) 2/Spigot bearing (noise occurs when clutch is released, engine on) 3/Metal to metal contact between clutch pivot ball and fork (engine off) 3/Poor lubrication on clutch pedal mechanisim (inside car, engine off) |
