4WDs

Fellas and Lasses.

My GF is in the market for a new car as the commonwhore is getting on in age and is starting to cause more problems then what its worth.

She is heavily into horses so towing capacity and reliability is the main focus. She has a thing about having a 4wd so im after anyones opinions on this area.

I am looking at either a Toyota Prado or Mitsubishi Pajero.

Both come in V6 or 4cyl turbo diesel. Im leaning towards the turbo diesel as it has max torque alot lower in the rev range compared to the beifer 6cyls.

Any recommendations?

Turbo diesel sounds like a good idea as a horse can weigh heaps and a float add another 700kg (also good for towing Astinas with busted gearboxes).
My concern would be the chassis, if I'm towing so often I'd want a good chassis to take the strain

go the Paj. havent heard anything really bad about them. (from the vice-pres of the Pajero Club Vic, which has ther cars other than Pajeros in it).

Prados like to blow gearboxes when put under strain. i've been witness to it! and then they tend to mark their territory like my volkswagen does

Be careful of Series 1 (2000ish) Patrols Turbo diesels as they can have oil consumption/piston slap promblems which *may* have been fixed under warranty

toyota make a far better 4wd then mitsubishi
i have owned 2x mitu tritons 4wd , 1x landcruiser 80series [the best on the market if u wanna spend a little extra] 1x landcruiser troopcarrier ,1x turbo nissan patrol , an the best r nissan or toyota by far with power ,strengh an features
my old neighbour had a couple off parado's an had no probs with them an he toes around a caravan that he sells icees out off [that mite not sound much] but each machine weighs a ton an there is 2 in each van plus other gear an the weight off the van on top off that so all up its about 3.5ton

thanks for comments.

Yeah the horse package can be up around 2-3T if shes carrying 2 of them. Each vehicle is rated to 2.5T braked towing capcity so thats all good.

I found after my first inspections that the Pajero was a nicer vehicle, the cabin was trimmed alot nicer then the toyota. It also has a more powerfull engine in it (3.2L as opposed to 3.0L and an extra 30 odd nm of torque)

The Prado is nice, but is pretty typical of a toyota car. Bland at the best.

I think I have settled on Turbo Diesel over the V6 mainly due to power delivery and fuel consumption.

Some specs for both:

Prado
------
Engine Code/Name 1KZ-TE
Engine capacity (cc) 2982
Engine type Diesel
Forced induction system Turbo
Engine description 4cyl/SOHC/2V
Maximum Power 96kW @ 3600rpm
Maximum Torque 343Nm @ 2000rpm

Pajero
-------
Engine code 4M41
Capacity (cm3) 3200
Fuel system type Diesel
Forced induction type Turbocharger
Engine description Four cylinders, in-line, DOHC, four valves per cylinder, aluminium alloy head, turbocharged.
Maximum power 121kW @ 3800rpm
Maximum torque 373Nm @ 2000rpm

The Pajero engine seems to be a better motor but I will take your comments into consideration Rod. I think the higher end landcruisers are out of the question and she said no to the patrols (too ugly!). They make a 4.2L turbo diesel which would be very nice but a little out of the price bracket.

Will see how both handle and drive next weekend. Im not tooo concerned about the 4wd side of it (ironic i know) about the only offroad it will see is the dirt road into the horse farm, but I think I may have a new hobby coming along. 4WD weekend anyone?

what about a 85 turbo deisel nissan patrol mq/mk style short wheel base it is in as brand new condition already has the big tyres ,uplift kit, snorkel ,bullbar t/bar ,flares all colour coded stereo cloth trim ,air an steer i think he wants around 10 grand for it
which i no is a little dearer tthen most for the model but it is one off the best examples around i dont really want a 4wd but im seriously thinking off buying myself cause i no its history an what it comes with

I'd buy a 78 F100 and stick a 428ci Cobra Jet big block in it plus a 5-6in lift kit under it. Fit some super-fat mud-pluggers that stick out way past the body line on rusty chromies, big chrome roll bar covered in mud and spots, dinged up tray, gun-rack on the back window. Then for the finishing touch, paint a Confederate flag on the roof. :P

On second thoughts, don't listen to me: I'm a hillbillie bogan

Actually Cosmo Dude, driving the truck will tint your neck a lovely shade of rouge all on its own. Young Pedowin, to drive the truck your spirit must feel like the Hillbillie, you must be the Hillbillie. Now repeat after me: "Hot damn"

Oh, and I almost forgot to include the two most important features of the Cletus Special; a bottle of Mississippi Moonshine (cheap Southern Comfort rip-off) and a big hound called Ol' Yeller :P

And my nikname refers to the fact that I live in the bush (ask ahb11m) and I drive a V8 Bogan-mobile. Unfortunately I haven't yet put it into full VB or Winnie Blue-spec, although I wouldn't mind trimming the interior in a nice shade of flanno...

James, the above response was only slightly slower than your 1.6, and we won't go into who defiled the bush, my verandah and my toilet at a recent function at Chez Bob, shall we James?
